Al-Qaeda gunmen on Thursday (February 14th) killed a Sahwa member and wounded three others when they attacked a checkpoint in al-Mahmoudiyyah district, south of Baghdad, police said.

A nearby civilian vehicle also was destroyed in the attack, according to Lt. Col. Hazem Ismail al-Taie of al-Mahmoudiyyah police.

The Sahwa member killed was in charge of the checkpoint, located in Qaraghul village in southern al-Mahmoudiyyah, he told Al-Shorfa.

"The gunmen tried to attack another checkpoint nearby, but Sahwa and police forces rebuffed them and forced them to flee," he said, adding that police are conducting large-scale security operations in search of the perpetrators.
