Five communication towers collapsed in different areas of Mosul following attacks launched by suspected al-Qaeda gunmen, the Ninawa provincial police said Thursday (February 14th).

The blasts shut down cell phone services across large areas of Mosul, and wounded three civilians and one communications worker, according to Ninawa police spokesman Col. Khalid al-Hamdani.

"Gunmen planted improvised explosive devices (IEDs) beneath five towers in al-Zahra, al-Jamia, Sumer, al-Tahrir and al-Tanak neighbourhoods at a late hour Wednesday night," he told Al-Shorfa.

"The police have opened an investigation into the incident, which falls under other similar terrorist attacks launched by al-Qaeda and other terrorist groups in the country," al-Hamdani said.
