Seven gunmen were arrested near al-Waleed border crossing in Anbar province as they attempted enter Iraq from Syria, the Iraqi border guard command said Thursday (January 31st).
Following intermittent clashes, a border guard force besieged the gunmen and forced them to surrender, said Brig. Gen. Hameed al-Rubaie, a deputy commander of border guard forces in Anbar province.
The gunmen, who arrived at the border on foot, "had machine guns and hand grenades in their possession", he told Al-Shorfa.
"They are all Iraqis wanted by the judiciary and have been living in Syria for years," he said.
The seven are now under investigation to identify the entity to which they belong and the reason for their entry into the country, he said.
