A force from the Iraq counter-terrorism agency on Wednesday (January 30th) arrested two suspected al-Qaeda leaders in southern Mosul, capital of Ninawa province, the Iraqi Interior Ministry said.

The two leaders were arrested in a raid on a residential building in Qabr al-Abd, ministry spokesman Col. Saad Maan told Al-Shorfa.

The men have been "wanted by the Iraqi judiciary since 2008 on several terrorist charges", he said, crediting the raid's surprise and speed with preventing them from escaping.

Explosives, weapons and two explosives vests found in the detainees' possession also were seized during the raid, Maan said.
