Suspected al-Qaeda gunmen on Thursday (December 27th) killed four Iraqi soldiers in an attack on an army checkpoint in Madaen, south of the capital Baghdad, police said.
Capt. Shaker Hamad al-Fraiji of the Madaen police told Al-Shorfa the gunmen used light weapons and hand grenades in their attack on the checkpoint, taking advantage of bad weather conditions and poor visibility in the area.
A military vehicle was burnt and another was heavily damaged in the attack, he said.
According to al-Fraiji, the attack carries al-Qaeda's fingerprints, and military forces have launched a campaign in search of those involved in the attack.
