An al-Qaeda gunman was killed and two others were wounded after they tried to attack a security checkpoint in northern Mosul on Saturday (December 15th), the Iraqi police in Ninawa province said.

"Three gunmen attacked a police checkpoint in an attempt to take over and kill security guards, prompting a violent, close-range, 10-minute clash between the two sides," police spokesperson Col. Khalid al-Hamdani told Al-Shorfa.

The wounded gunmen were arrested and detained at a private hospital, he said.

Al-Hamdani said police seized the gunmen's vehicle and weapons, and arrested a suspect who was photographing the clash nearby when the attack began.
