The Wasit police announced Friday (December 7th) it arrested nine suspected al-Qaeda gunmen in a security operation carried out in the north of the province.

"The intelligence-based operation included several raids and house searches in al-Sewara district, north of al-Kut, capital of Wasit province," provincial police chief Maj. Gen. Hussein Habbouba told Al-Shorfa.

"We found evidence indicating their involvement in recently-launched attacks in the province," he said. The suspects have belonged "to al-Qaeda since 2008".

Habbouba said the detainees were taken to a security detention facility for investigation, pending their referral to the Iraqi judiciary.

There is no doubt the quick arrest of the terrorists and giving them the punishment they deserve for the crimes they have committed may deter some from repeating such acts that killed many innocent and powerless people. Their death was imminent only because they were present in the place chosen by the terrorists to implement their shameful acts to prove their strength or to hide behind the mask of religion.
