The Iraqi government announced Thursday (December 6th) that seven armed groups have joined Iraq's national reconciliation project as a prelude to laying down their arms and joining the country's political process.

Amer al-Khuzaie, the government's national reconciliation advisor, told Al-Shorfa the groups are active in Anbar, Diyala, Wasit, Babil and in the southern and western Baghdad areas, and include the 20th Revolution Brigades, Malek al-Ashtar Brigade, Khalid Bin al-Walid Brigade, Arab Tribes Sons Brigade, Omar Bin al-Khattab Brigade, Children of Iraq Brigade and Saqr Quraish Brigade.

"The Iraqi government and the Iraqi people across the spectrum did not, and will not, negotiate with al-Qaeda, given the danger it poses to the future of Iraq and because it spills innocent blood," he said. "Therefore, the security forces are shouldering the task of eliminating [al-Qaeda]."
