Security forces on Friday (November 16th) killed Wissam Shallal, emir of al-Qaeda in Baqubah, the capital of Diyala province, the Iraqi Interior Ministry said.

"An armed clash erupted [Friday] night between a joint police and army force and Shallal, who was with three aides, after the force tried to arrest him as he passed through al-Azeem city, north of Baqubah," ministry spokesperson Col. Saad Maan told Al-Shorfa.

He said the three aides surrendered while Shallal resisted and opened fire on the force, leading to his death.

According to Maan, Shallal had been one of the most prominent third-generation al-Qaeda leaders and had been involved in many acts of violence in the province.
