Security forces have thwarted an attack targeting Iraq's electricity transmission network, the Iraqi Defence Ministry said Saturday (October 20th).

Ministry spokesperson Col. Dhia al-Wakeel told Al-Shorfa that army forces dismantled 18 improvised explosive devices (IEDs) planted under transmission towers that supply electricity to many areas of the capital Baghdad, as well as northern and western areas of the country.

He credited residents of Mushahadah, a town located 30 kilometres north of Baghdad, with informing security forces about the attempt.

Security forces arrested four suspects, one of whom confessed to working with the others to plant the IEDs, al-Wakeel said.
