Unknown gunmen killed on Friday (September 21st) a prominent cleric known for his opposition to terrorist groups, the Iraqi police in Ninawa province said.

"Unknown gunmen opened fire from machine guns on Sheikh Nejim al-Karkhi, a member of the Association of Muslim Scholars in Ninawa, in al-Nabi Younis in eastern Mosul, killing him immediately," Ninawa police spokesperson Col. Khalid al-Hamdani told Al-Shorfa.

A security force secured the area and transported al-Karkhi's body to a nearby hospital. Police are now investigating the incident, he said.
