The UN Security Council is calling for "extensive national dialogue" in Yemen as soon as possible, Germany's Permanent Representative to the UN Peter Wittig said Tuesday (September 18th).

Following consultations on the situation in Yemen, Wittig, who is currently chairing the Security Council, said member states "agreed on the call to start extensive national dialogue as soon as possible to prepare the ground for a stable and united Yemen".

He said member states share the concern of UN special envoy to Yemen Jamal Benomar, who said he is worried "over attempts to derail the transition" and what he considers a "serious humanitarian situation which warrants urgent action".

The Friends of Yemen meeting scheduled to be held next week will be an opportunity "to reiterate the international community's firm support of the transition and the Yemeni people", Wittig said.
