Security forces on Thursday (August 30th) arrested a self-appointed al-Qaeda "wali" in Basra province, officials announced.
"The wali of Basra is now in the hands of security forces after trying for years to capture him for his complicity in terrorist acts that caused hundreds of innocent deaths," said Jabbar al-Hamdani, spokesperson for Basra province.
"Security forces detained the wali of Basra during an ambush tightly co-ordinated by Basra and Baghdad security forces on the road connecting both provinces," he said.
The suspect's name will not be released to allow security officials more time to conduct their investigation, he said.
