Four Iraqi soldiers were killed and five others were wounded Tuesday (July 24th) in an armed attack carried out by suspected al-Qaeda gunmen on an army checkpoint in Qayyara, south of Mosul, Iraqi police in Ninawa province said.

"A military checkpoint was attacked by al-Qaeda gunmen using machine guns and mortars, causing the death of four soldiers and wounding of five others," said Col. Khalid al-Hamdani, the Ninawa police spokesperson.

"Two gunmen were killed in the clashes that followed the attack," al-Hamdani said, noting that security forces launched a large-scale campaign to track down the other gunmen.

The Iraqi Government must do its best to restore security to the Iraqi people. Iraqis have suffered enough from terrorism. Terrorist movements have spread inside the Iraqi territory. They have taken advantage of the bad conditions, especially at the security level. These movements have quickly spread and this fact has greatly confused the Iraqi Government and made it work quickly to set up a security service to fight terrorism. The Iraqi Security Forces have not acquired the needed expertise to fight and eradicate these movements. Thus, we must give them the chance and we must not forget that eradicating terrorism is hard work. Besides, the Security Forces have suffered from low morale and many members have sacrificed their lives in order to regain security in Iraq. And indeed, they were able to eradicate many terrorists and arrest many others. However, the intensive presence of these terrorist movements will further delay this matter. It will take some time so that the Security Forces will be able to dominate terrorism and secure Iraq for the citizens. The latter will live in Iraq without suffering and without fearing suicide bombings. I hope that Iraq will become safe again and that its citizens will live in peace led by a strong Government and under good security conditions.
