Jordan on Sunday (July 22nd) vowed to take "all necessary measures" to secure its border with Syria as officials announced plans to open its first refugee camp, AFP reported.
Referencing "recent developments", information minister and government spokesperson Samih al-Maaytah said that Jordan will take "all necessary measures to protect the northern region" while also working to help Syrian refugees.
"Jordan will continue providing aid to our Syrian brothers who have sought refuge in the kingdom," he said.
His statement came after a cabinet meeting to discuss "developments and events in Syria as well as their impact on Jordan".
Also on Sunday, officials announced that the government is to open its first camp for Syrian refugees in the border town of Zaatari, the Jordan Times reported.
The camp will have facilities "to host between 3,000 and 5,000 refugees", said Ali Bibi, a liaison officer at the United Nations Refugee Agency.
Bibi said the camp can later be expanded to host as many as 113,000 people.
Jordan is currently hosting an estimated 140,000 Syrians.

In the recent days, the number of Syrian refugees in Jordan has increased. In some days, about one thousand Syrian citizens flee to Jordan fearing and escaping from Bashar's weapon and his blind army who do not have any mercy. Then, life has become harder and harder due to the large numbers of Syrian refugees All these are responsibilities on Jordan and there is no humanity in the life of the Syrian citizens that have been selling vegetables on the pavements to earn their living if they can. We ask Jordan to take care of our Syrian brothers. Nothing good will be lost; God knows what everyone works for.

The Syrian airlines get very close to its likeness with the Jordanians and that makes Jordan the nearest refuge for Syrians escaping the oppression of the bloody and tyrant, Bashar. After the free revolution of the Syrians and the bloody reaction of Bashar against not only the Syrian activists but also the unarmed citizens in their homes, he and his army kill everyone who comes under their hands whatever his nationality, kind, or age. These criminals do not differentiate between a child and an old man, a man or a woman, armed or unarmed; they kill everyone and they do not have mercy or flexibility. Many Syrians have run away to Jordan, some in a legal way while others illegally, some have gone to their relatives in Jordan and some do not know where to go. All they know is to run away with his family from the oppression of the fascist regime.
