The Iraqi Interior Ministry said Monday (July 16th) that it began clearing landmines from 12 sites in a 60 square-kilometre area in Anbar and Ninawa provinces.
"The minefields in the two provinces include about 120,000 landmines which have been around since the 1980s and continue to cause many deaths among civilians, especially shepherds and travelers, and which are still hindering investment there," said Col. Hikmat Mahmoud al-Masari, director of media for the Interior Ministry.
The landmines "would be a threat if al-Qaeda gets them and manages to use them for terrorist operations", he said.
The campaign began after Iraq received equipment used for dismantling and removing landmines, al-Masari added.

Which could cause terrorism and the terrorists to expand extensively in Iraq, in view of the fact that there is quite a considerable amount of disorganization within the Iraqi forces, which are themselves engaged in the protection of Iraq, and the fact that there is a lack of unified command for the elements of the Iraqi forces, and when the ranks are unified once again and when they work hand in hand in order to confront terrorism and terrorist and extremist attacks that terrorists could carry out in Iraq, which could lead many terrorists to launch their lowly attacks inside Iraq. There is also much corruption in the Iraqi government, which could in turn help the terrorists and extremists to engage in these attacks in Iraq, and getting rid of this can be achieved by combating corruption inside the Iraqi government.

Hafez al-Assad had sent to the Iranian president his advice not to stop fighting and never to surrender to the statements from the International Security Council, and that advice had stated clearly a warning from former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein, that if the Iranian president were to approve the resolution issued by the international Security Council which led to the death of many Iraqi citizens by the hand of the former regime of al-Assad, it was first the father Hafez al-Assad and then the son Bashar al-Assad. In addition to that, former president Hafez al-Assad was the primary mediator for the former president of Iran on possessing those missiles which previously had hit beautiful Baghdad, so he bought them from Libyan former president Muammar Gaddafi and sent them to the Iranian president to hit beautiful Baghdad. So he was the first one to take a step towards getting the Iranian army to hit Baghdad using these missiles, which led to the death of thousands of innocent Iraqi citizens, so whether sister Lebanon or beloved Syria or old Iraq, they all knew well what the al-Assad regime was like – Hafez then Bashar – for what they both committed of crimes against all definitions of humanity.
