Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah named his half-brother Prince Salman as heir to the throne on Monday (June 18th) following the death of Crown Prince Nayef, state media reported.
According to the state television station Al-Akhbariyah, the king appointed 76-year-old Salman "crown prince and deputy prime minister". Prince Ahmed bin Abdul Aziz will succeed Nayef as interior minister.
Salman became defence minister last October and previously served as governor of Riyadh since 1962. Nayef died on Saturday in Switzerland from cardiac problems, according to AFP.
