A previously unknown armed group calling itself the "Syrian Revolutionaries -- Aleppo Province" is holding hostage a group of Lebanese Shia pilgrims who were reported missing last week, AFP reported Thursday (May 31st).
"The kidnapped Lebanese are being looked after by us and are in good health," the group said in a statement.
"Negotiations for their release are possible as soon as [Hizbullah leader Hassan] Nasrallah apologises [for remarks he made in a recent speech]," the statement said. The group did not provide further details about what angered them in his speech.

It is known that the human gatherings achieve social progress with the urbanization and rule of the law. We saw societies that started moving from the tribal system to the state system and from the sectarianism to the idea of citizenship. This is the foundation of the modern states after the departure of the occupiers, who tried to keep the social loyalty limited to the sect, ethnicity or tribe. We saw how the French occupation tries to divide Syria into five sub-states based on these considerations and we also saw how these plans failed in the face of the resistance, solidarity and awareness of the civilized Syrian people. the modern states were established on the idea of citizenship which means equality in the rights and duties.

The Lebanese army, even if its power were to grow bigger, is not a match for the Hezbollah militia. Also, its make-up is based on sectarian considerations, and it does not possess the means to command respect and impose its force, and consequently, the trend toward making Lebanon a center of conflict, whether on the part of Israel, Syria or Iran, are factors that are beyond analysis. This is because the surprises that occur in this country are not restricted to a particular view or the specific time frame for the crisis, and the causes for its break out, and the proof of that is the assassination of al-Hariri, which came in order to cause confusion and to give Hezbollah an arm to create a weak state that takes orders from it. Also, the rift among the Christians, and the negativity of the Sunnis, and the emergence of alliances that are more powerful than the allies of the past, all of these are factors could lead to the explosion of the situation to the advantage of an external player, and Syria is the one that is mostly involved in fomenting the coming chaos inside Lebanon, not just because it has lost a part of its territory by the establishment of the Lebanese state, but on account of a vengeance that lasted for more than half a century, when Beirut was at the root of a change in the Syrian regime through external means. Another thing is that the recent withdrawal of Syria from Lebanon, after the latter had been a source of revenue and an environment where it could lay out its objectives. Lebanon suffers from internal problems between the Shiites and the Sunnis and the Christians, and also it has turned into a playground for the conflict between Iran, Syria and Israel, and a stage for these parties to settle their differences and achieve their objectives and ambitions.

Syria is a main player in creating the crisis in Lebanon, and Hezbollah is simply one chain link that grew bigger with Khomeini’s revolution, and it is still called the Shiite Crescent, whose base is Iran and its chain links start with Iraq, then Syria and then Lebanon. However, the circumstances surrounding the popular revolt in Syria have changed the parameters and the strategies, and things started to take another direction toward a new situation, causing Damascus to view Lebanon, even with the presence of its ally, Hezbollah, as a bridge for smuggling money and weapons, especially as the atmosphere in Lebanon is conducive to this, and in exchange, it should be exploded so that the battlefield would expand and thus reduce the political and economic pressure on Syria.
