An al-Qaeda leader was killed and four other gunmen were arrested during two separate operations west of Mosul, the Iraqi army announced Monday (May 14th).
Brig. Gen. Mohammed al-Jubouri, assistant commander of the Iraqi army in Ninawa province, told Al-Shorfa that army forces "engaged Shakir Tawfik Sultan -- an al-Qaeda leader who was hiding in a building in the Rabie district hours after he entered Iraq from Syria -- and killed him".
Al-Jubouri said two Iraqi soldiers were killed in the operation.
"The army launched a surprise attack on another building in the same area, arresting four al-Qaeda gunmen and seizing explosives and weapons," al-Jubouri said.
