The Iraqi army on Tuesday (April 17th) launched a new military campaign targeting al-Qaeda members in Babil, the Iraqi Defence Ministry said.

Four hundred soldiers from the Iraqi army's 3rd Division are taking part in the campaign.

The campaign "targets al-Qaeda members and collaborators and focuses on the northern areas of the province --- Haswa, Jebla, Musayyib and Mahawil -- to pre-empt expected terrorist attacks by al-Qaeda", Brig. Gen. Salem Abdullah al-Gharrawi, assistant army commander in Babil province, told Al-Shorfa.

Al-Gharrawi said the campaign "will be open until its goals, which include establishment of full security and cleansing the area of terrorism, have been realised".
