Egypt's political leaders met on Sunday (April 15th) after a number of candidates were disqualified from next month's presidential election, AFP reported.
Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, head of the ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF), met the heads of 17 political parties and groups and members of parliament to discuss developments ahead of the May 23rd presidential election.
On Saturday, Egypt's election commission said that 10 of the 23 registered presidential candidates had been barred from the race.
SCAF is also examining a law passed by parliament that would ban members of the former regime from standing for office.

Mohamed Ragab Asqalani will be Egypt’s next president. In light of the circumstances that the country and the Arab world are going through, I prayed Almighty Allah and decided to run for president given that I am eligible to become president. Among the conditions, the next president must be a young person who knows where to go and to whom to increase investments and work on developing the cooperation between the Arab world and African countries. Cooperation was almost absent during the last thirty years. We have to establish projects for young people, we have to work seriously to find solutions for those who cannot afford to pay for their medical treatment. We have to provide pensions for the elderly who do not have a breadwinner. Now, Egypt wants to impose the law not through iron and fire but through the supremacy of the law. We must have a president who knows how to apply the law, who is neutral among the different sects of the Egyptian people, be they Muslims or Christians. He must enact laws for places of worship and to take revenge on the former regime, those who have been investigated and others. He has to enact a tax law based on right and equality through taking more from the wealthy people in a just way like in Islam. He must spread love as mentioned by the noble Prophet (Peace be upon him). Now, Egypt wants to apply Islam in every sense of the word and not through endorsing extremism as some people did. It must be based on the Prophet’s Sunnah. He used to deal with the Muslims and Christians fairly. I do not belong to any party or group. I am juts an Egyptian Muslim and I want nothing but success from God and His support. Then I want nothing but good for our Egypt, which once was the beacon of the whole world. We have to regain the dignity of Egypt and Egyptians not only in the Arab and African worlds but all over the world. We must work son solving Arab and Islamic people’s problems and first Jerusalem. Jerusalem is a part of Egypt. However, I cannot promise this at the beginning of my term but after achieving prosperity for Egypt so that I will be able to free Jerusalem, then Iraq, Lebanon and the whole Arab nation.

All the candidates should bear in mind that Egyptians need a lot of hard work and the provision of all services. Also, everyone should be aware that many parties will work on combating them and will reject their existence. Besides, they should be aware that they will face political problems before the fatigue, suffering and exhaustion which they will experience after responding to the demands of the sons of Egypt. Therefore, they should do their utmost, intensify their work, and be loyal to this country and its people in order to avoid any difficult and tough conditions. As a matter of fact, all the candidates should show cooperation. On the other hand, Egyptians should show a real and serious unity with the Government which will be formed, given that I am confident that the coming Egyptian president will not be welcomed by all the people. This means that there will always be opposition and people who will totally reject some political icons. Thus, dealing with this issue wisely and patiently will bring everyone to the safe side.

I would like to criticize the ongoing farce in Egypt because of the presidential elections, because of the insistence of some people to make sure it goes according to their whims. They want to violate the rights of the people of Egypt and the rights of the martyrs, who sacrificed their souls in order to make Egypt reach this historic day. Some people work on stealing the revolution of the Egyptian youth and destroying their dreams. Egypt and its people aspire to a disciplined democratic practice rather than defaming the candidates in this way and making public statements against each other on TV. Some of them accused others of disloyalty and dual citizenship. I see that this is defective in this historic event, which is about to happen in Egypt. In addition, control of the parliament by the Islamists led to making many candidates revoke their decision to run in the election. The conditions are very difficult and they were tailored to serve the Islamic currents. I criticize these procedures and the whole electoral process, which was based on injustice and attempts to destroy the political candidates from the first moment. How will Egypt be ruled afterwards while the beginning of the democratic way started in this way? What will be the destination of democracy in Egypt? How will the presidential elections will be run under these very negative circumstances and the way of managing the preparations and legislation that favor some parties at the expense of the others?

After the Revolution, Egypt witnessed the emergence of strong Islamic forces and currents with different thoughts. These currents are now working in public. Indeed, most Islamic groups are now recognized as political parties. The Muslim Brotherhood, the Salafis and the Islamic group founded the Freedom and Justice Party, the Light and Originality Party and the Construction and Development Party respectively. Those currents have become able to communicate with the public openly and without fear. Moreover, these currents have become the focal point of the various media. These parties proved more than once their ability to mobilize the masses. Indeed, they managed to organize mass demonstrations which exceeded the number of the other parties and movements that belong to the liberal or secular power in Egypt. We note that the Islamic parties won more than half of the seats in Parliament. We also noticed their desire to play an important role in the political arena, especially that the Egyptian Parliament is the body that will prepare the new Constitution. The latter will define the powers of all the authorities, most notably the powers of the President of the Republic. However, the dominant concern of some groups is about their lack of political experience, particularly as the Islamists had been isolated from the political action for the past three decades, apart from the Muslim Brotherhood. In addition, many of them do not have the intellectual and organizational capacities in solving the problems of the masses that have accumulated since the era of the former regime. The Islamists, as secularists claim, have an uncompromising quest to impose their ideas on citizens. They want to impose the veil on women and punish the violators of religious teachings through Islamic Law. Besides, they embrace ideas that restrict people's freedom and draw them back for decades. Moreover, Islamist rule will affect the tourist sector which has significant revenues. Islamists also want to change the curriculum in order to impose the hard-line religious agenda. They will also prohibit bank interest rates. In fact, they are seeking to monopolize everything, including the former National Party. They are trying to control the presidency as well as the Government and the Parliament. They will not give others the opportunity to participate in the political arena. They reject true democracy. The citizens must just listen and obey.

There is an ongoing dispute in Egypt about the Constituent Assembly of the Constitution. The crisis was exacerbated after the election of the People’s Assembly and the Shura Council of the Constituent Assembly where Islamists represent the majority of its members. In fact, the largest proportions of the Members of Parliament who are representatives of the Committee belong to the Islamic Movement. The Council also includes a large number of civil society figures who make up the other half of the Committee. Thus, the Islamists represent over half of the members. This makes the coming Constitution an Islamist one. The other political forces had to withdraw, including Al-Azhar Al-Sharif and the Supreme Constitutional Court. It is better to opt for a Constitution which states that Egypt is an Islamic, national, democratic, constitutional State. It should be a modern State based on citizenship, the rule of law. It must ensure the freedom of thought and belief, and criminalize discrimination between the Egyptians on the basis of religion, race and sex. It should also ensure the freedom of religious practices and support national unity.

Egypt is an Islamic country but not an extremist one. It will never become an extremely secular State. Egypt will remain the same; the country of the greatest and most brilliant religious scholars. It is also the nation of the greatest actors and directors in the Arab world cinema. We will always see the mosques, churches, clubs and tourism. Meanwhile, we'll see the most important Islamic schools of thought. We will continue to be the source of Enlightenment ideas that may contradict religion in some cases. Egypt is an Arab and Islamic nation, but not the private property of the Islamists. Egypt is inherently a tolerant country with multiple visions and views. Still, Egypt will never surrender to any intruder’s secular trend. Egypt also has a lot of ingredients and means which could ensure the establishment of a moderate Islamic regime based on the doctrine of the Sunnis. The most important thing is that the Egyptian people are basically religious. They have always clung to the principles of true religion despite the failed attempts to uproot it.
