Two attacks against mosques in the capital Baghdad and Abu Ghraib have been thwarted, Iraqi police said Friday (March 30th).

Baghdad police spokesperson Col. Mushtaq Talib told Al-Shorfa that six improvised explosive devices (IEDs) were placed at the gates of two mosques on Friday at noon, one in Baghdad's Risala neighbourhood and the other in central Abu Ghraib.

A special police force managed to dismantle five of the IEDs, while the sixth detonated without causing any casualties, he said.

"If the security forces had not dismantled the IEDs, the two attacks could have killed and wounded scores of worshippers with the start of Friday sermon," Talib said.
