An al-Qaeda leader who was sentenced to death for his involvement in killing policemen and attacking foreign troops in Iraq was arrested during a security operation in south-western Baghdad province, the Iraqi Interior Ministry said Wednesday (March 14th).

Maj. Gen. Adil Daham, the Interior Ministry spokesperson, told Al-Shorfa that Iraqi forces arrested Sheikh Ali al-Heryyan in a raid on a house in al-Radhwaniya where he was staying.

Daham said al-Heryyan "was convicted of several crimes, including participating in the 2009 bombings of the Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and he was sentenced to death in absentia for his involvement in those heinous crimes."
