Eight militants, including a senior al-Qaeda leader accused of carrying out foreign embassy bombings in Baghdad in 2010, were arrested west of Samarra, the Iraqi Ministry of Defence said Saturday (March 10th).

Maj. Gen. Mohammed al-Askari, official spokesperson for the Ministry of Defence, told Al-Shorfa an Iraqi army force raided residential buildings in the al-Deyoum village west of Samarra and arrested the suspects.

Iraqi forces seized a large ammunition cache containing 30 barrels of explosives, 20 improvised explosive devices (IEDs), seven mortars, six Katyushas and maps.

Al-Askari said the other gunmen were involved in carrying out attacks with IEDs and car bombs and launching missiles.
