The Iraqi army said nine suspected al-Qaeda members were arrested in al-Tarmiya, north of Baghdad, during a security operation Wednesday (February 8th).
Lt. Col. Mushtaq Talib, a Baghdad police spokesperson, told Al-Shorfa that 40 Iraqi soldiers took part in the operation that targeted 10 residential buildings in the al-Shatt and al-Baijiya areas of the al-Tarmiya district.
Talib said the operation led to the arrest of nine individuals of whom three are wanted in connection with terrorism-related charges. The army seized weapons and explosives weighing more than 500 kilograms.
He said the military operation was launched after intelligence was received on the whereabouts of al-Qaeda elements who returned to Iraq from Syria.
