Ten suspected members of al-Qaeda in Iraq were arrested during a military operation conducted by the Iraqi Army's 17th Division Wednesday morning (February 1st) south of Baghdad, The Iraqi Ministry of Defence said.
Maj. Gen. Nasser al-Ghannam, the division's commander, said in a press conference in Baghdad that the suspects were arrested while the army was conducting an operation in desert areas south of Baghdad.
Ghannam said the detainees include two Arab nationals who are believed to be suicide bombers. The detainees had documents indicating that they entered Iraq about two months ago as tourists.
He said two explosive vests, explosives and light weapons were found in the suspects' possession. The detainees were transferred to a temporary detention facility pending their referral to the Iraqi judiciary.
