Suicide attacks targeting Taji central prison killed at least 20 Iraqis and wounded 26 more on Monday (November 28th).
Col. Balasem Medhat al-Jurani of the Army's operations command in Baghdad told Al-Shorfa that during prisoner visitation time, a suicide bomber drove a car bomb into the main gate of the prison that houses most of the dangerous prisoners convicted in terrorism-related cases.
"The suicide bomber tried to storm the prison gates," he said. "However, the security forces opened fire on him. Twenty people, including 11 prison guards, were killed and 26 others were wounded in the ensuing explosion."
Al-Jurani accused al-Qaeda of carrying out the attack. He also said that the explosion caused major damage to the structure of the prison and the facility's external electronic surveillance system.
