In Diyala, Iraqi army forces arrested 15 suspected al-Qaeda members during security operations the army conducted in Khanaqin, Meqdadiya, Sadiya and Khalis early on Friday.
Brig. Gen. Muhsin al-Kriti, commander of Iraqi army's 5th Division, told Al-Shorfa, "The main goal of these security operations is to arrest al-Qaeda terrorists and militias that are supported by other countries in the region."
"During the first hours, the operations led to the arrest of 15 terrorists, and the discovery and seizure of their weapons and explosives," al-Kriti said.
In Ninawa, federal police arrested three suspects accused of being members of a gang that extorted business owners.
Maj. Gen. Mahdi Subeih al-Gharrawi, commander of federal police in Ninawa province, told Al-Shorfa, "The police set up an ambush near the electronics market in central Mosul and managed to arrest three individuals who would enter stores every month and extort money from owners by force for a terrorist group."
Al-Gharrawi said all the detainees are under investigation. "We will identify the people behind them and arrest all the terrorists who have worked with them," he said.
