Alleged members of a cell of al-Qaeda went on trial on Sunday (September 18th) in Riyadh, wire agencies reported.

The 41 defendants allegedly planned a series of attacks against Western bases in the kingdom, Kuwait and Qatar. The alleged cell was broken up in 2006 in what Saudi Arabia's attorney general called "the most important al-Qaeda" operation ever undertaken.

He said the group had co-ordinated with al-Qaeda cells in Iraq and Syria to "ensure logistical support for their operations", as well as funnelled money to the Taliban in Afghanistan.
