Egypt's Interior Minister Mansour al-Issawi dismissed 669 police officers on Wednesday (July 13th) "to bring new blood" into the force, AFP reported.

Of those sacked, 505 were generals, 10 of whom were high-level aides to ministers. State television reported that 37 of the fired officers are charged with killing protesters.

"Any police officer will be held accountable for any violation," al-Issawi said.

The dismissals come as protesters continue to hold a sit-in in Cairo and other cities to protest the slow pace of holding Mubarak-era officials accountable.

Dear Mr. Minister, we want purification, not just change. We still have senior security leaders in their positions at Alexandria. For example, the officers of the Civil Affairs Authority are still in their positions. I want complete purification that will replace the old faces with new honorable faces to run the Civil Affairs Authority in Alexandria. Thank you.
