The Taliban claimed responsibility on Tuesday (July 12th) for the killing of Ahmad Wali Karzai, the brother of Afghan President Hamid Karzai, AFP reported.
Ahmad Karzai -- who was the head of the Kandahar provincial council and considered one of the country's most powerful leaders -- was reportedly shot dead in his home by Sardar Mohammad, a man described as a close friend, according Kandahar provincial council member Haji Ehsan.
Karzai's assassination is "one of our biggest achievements", Taliban spokesman Usuf Ahmadi told AFP. "We assigned Sardar Mohammad to kill him."
"This is the life of all Afghan people," said President Hamid Karzai during a press conference. "I hope these miseries which every Afghan family faces will one day end."
