A criminal court in Cairo found former Minister of Tourism Zuhair Garana guilty of corruption on Tuesday (May 10th) and sentenced him to five years in prison.

Garana, who acted as minister under President Hosni Mubarak, was convicted of wasting $1 million in public funds after authorising the sale of state land near the resort town of Ain Sokhna at a price far below market value.

The court also found two businessmen on trial with the former minister guilty. Garana pled not guilty, saying the investigation was not thorough enough.
