Yemen has appealed to the international community for assistance in its "open battle" against Al-Qaeda, The National reported on Friday (October 8th).

This week's attack on a British diplomat's convoy in Sanaa demonstrates that al-Qaeda is still capable of terror despite a government offensive to eradicate it, said Tarqi al-Shami, a spokesman for the ruling People's General Congress.

"There is political support for the government in its fight against terrorism, but we hope this support will transfer into concrete support to the government's capacity in battling terrorism," al-Shami said.

The British embassy in Sanaa remains closed to the public until a review of the security situation is complete, said Daisy Organ, an embassy spokeswoman.
