The National Alliance missed the Monday deadline it set to select a nominee for prime minister, wire services reported Monday (September 27th).
The National Alliance is a combination of the Iraqi National Alliance and Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's State of Law Coalition. Alliance leaders hinted that al-Maliki would be their candidate.
"Many parties have no objection to al-Maliki's nomination, but we want the approval of all parties," said Qusai Abd al-Wahab, a leader of the Sadrist party that is under the National Alliance umbrella.
Without a leading candidate the alliance will take a vote among the two leading candidates, al-Maliki and Vice President Adel Abdul-Mahdi, according to wire reports. No specific date on such a vote was announced.
