The Kuwait Fire Services Department is now receiving applications for a fire fighting unit comprised of women, the Kuwait Times reported Saturday (July 3rd).

Graduates of the training course will enter the service with the rank of sergeant. The female fire fighters' primary responsibility will be to conduct safety inspections of women-only establishments such as gyms, salons and health clubs.

Twenty women will be selected for training, said Naeem al-Haid, head of the fire department.

The work of the firefighters is very difficult, and it is inconsistent with the nature of the Arab woman, which means that it is very difficult for her to work in this field and participate in extinguishing fires, because this is extremely difficult for her. The nature of work at the firefighting department is different from the other departments, where women can participate. The problem is that this work requires great effort in pulling the water hoses from the fire engine to the fire location, and it requires climbing a very high ladder and jumping from windows in some cases, in addition to breaking into the fire locations. The firefighter may also face some obstacle that must be pushed or broken in order to get to the target or the victims. Of course, such objects may be too heavy to be handled by a woman. In addition, the woman’s physical abilities do not qualify her to carry the injured people or any other person to be saved from the fires. Therefore, I believe that firefighting is one of the most difficult jobs for women, due to all of the aforementioned factors. The woman has become an active member of society and she tries to participate in all fields of life, but there are some fields that the woman cannot work in, and their nature forces her to stay away from them.

As far as I’m concerned, I think that the Kuwaiti fire department shouldn’t have approved women joining the firefighting teams. In fact, this job is dangerous and requires a physical and muscular endeavor, which women may lack, given their physiology and nature. Moreover, women are sensitive and unable to handle such issues. The repercussions of fire, including destruction and injuries, require firefighters to be courageous enough to go into the fire in order to save persons surrounded by flames, control the fire and stop it from spreading. I think that female fire fighters will never benefit the fire department at all. On the contrary, they will harm the department and its functioning. Women can serve as first aid nurses, because this job better suits the female nature, and they will serve more efficiently than in the firefighting department.
