A member of Kuwait's parliamentary opposition filed a motion to question the prime minister over what he says is a lack of action in dealing with high pollution levels, the Kuwait Times reported Monday (May 31st).

Khaled Tahus from the Popular Action Bloc had warned that he would file the motion if the premier and government did not respond to citizens' complaints about alarming pollution rates allegedly harming residents of the Ali Sabah al-Salem area south of Kuwait City.

The site, home to 45,000 people, is an "environmental disaster area", said Tahus. The government says it has cautioned factories operating in the area and that the pollution levels are not excessive.
