Mahmoud Nada sat in front of al-Hussainiya school in Cairo's al-Abbasiya district last week nervously reading his mathematics notebook, in a race with time to review as much material as he could.
Nada, a third-year high school student, was about to take his final exams.
Egypt's high school final exams are one of the most important events on a family's calendar. The exams began June 9th and continue until July 4th.
Exams this year posed a great challenge for Nada, who had difficulty studying and attending classes recently because of numerous demonstrations in al-Abbasiya during the past six months.
"High school exams this year have a different flavour," Nada said. "I am eager to excel and get a high score in order to enrol in an engineering college because the country has a great need for [engineers] at this critical time."
Students are taking their exams in a tense political climate as the presidential elections will be held Saturday (June 16th) and completed Sunday. A constitutional court ruling issued Thursday dissolved the recently elected People's Assembly, and the ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces is expected to transfer power after the presidential elections.
Trials of former Mubarak era officials are continuing, and demonstrations have become a regular occurrence during the past six months.
Abdel Rahman Khalil, another third year student, agreed that studying recently has been difficult, saying that he and his schoolmates initially felt frustrated because of the tense political situation.
"The frustration did not last long as many of us know that reform is coming to the country and that the hardworking individuals will have a place [in the new Egypt] and a good job," he said.
Yara Saeed, a second year high school student, said, "My school is in the Zamalek district in downtown Cairo, and often when demonstrations took place I could not go to school. That caused a lot of stress in the beginning, but things improved after that."
Saeed said everyone should help rebuild Egypt, noting that she and her schoolmates were very active during the height of political demonstrations in February 2011.
Officials implemented tight security measures at the testing sites to protect the 419,829 students taking exams this year. The Ministries of Education, Interior and Health, and the armed forces, are on high alert with ambulances stationed near the testing sites, according to Al-Masry al-Youm. The Ministry of Education set up a hotline to handle concerns from students and parents.
High school examinations were the subject of debate in recent months as parliament approved a new system that requires students to take only one final exam to earn a diploma. The exam is taken at the end of the third year instead of at the conclusion of both the second and third years.
Secondary education in Egypt consists of three academic years, the first of which covers all required science and literary courses. During the second and third years, students can choose their own area of concentration.
Kamal Mugheeth, an education expert, told Al-Shorfa that despite parliament's simplified exam system, the last two academic years have been the hardest in decades in Egypt.
"I think it increased the burden on families and students, but I think the government and concerned agencies will ensure the exams take place without hitches so as not to significantly affect the students," he said.
Other parents said that events of the past year caused their children to become more engaged politically.
"There's no denying that the security situation in the country has improved," said Suad Abdul-Hamid, a mother of a high school student. "Sometimes I feel that my daughter follows the news too intently, which stresses her and keeps her from studying."
Abdul-Hamid said her daughter was not interested in politics prior to the revolution. She used to watch Arabic and foreign television series but now follows the People's Assembly sessions and political talk shows.
Nader Girgis, whose daughter is in her third year of high school, said concerns about the impact of political events on students are exaggerated.
"I believe that high school students are the sons and daughters of this country and have to endure what happens and contribute to improving it," he said.
"The current generation of young people in Egypt, whether they are in [secondary] school or attending university, are educated and aware, as evidenced by the fact that they outperformed the older generations and started a revolution to build a democratic system of government," Girgis said.

The educational sector in Egypt needs a lot of development to make it keep up its pace with the scientific progress in the world. Egypt’s educational system, just like many developing countries, is in need of development and even the curriculum is very old and does not work on the development of the student's minds, but rather the student finishes his education career hating the studies so that his ambitions are forgotten. Many students have dreams that they will be doctors or engineers, but their scores do not allow them to get into the colleges that they want to study in. This is in addition to the difficult exams that come to the students and have some questions that are outside of the curriculum i.e. they focused on a topic that is beyond the capacity of the student. The education must evolve and must have a practical side that we miss in our schools and our universities. Therefore, the students graduated without being aware of the nature of the work as everything they study is often not related to the professional life. This is one of the most important causes that make us, the Egyptians, retarded.

Some students also got access to the secret exams and published them on the internet during the exam time, which has never happened before. This leakage was unfair to many students, especially those who study hard, behave morally, and refuse to cheat despite the difficulty of the exams. However, they got unsuitable marks, while those who cheated got higher marks. This means that the minimum level of the admission to the top colleges would be higher. This is unfair and the official committee should be fair in this respect because they are responsible for these leakages and the rampancy of the cheating cases.

The secondary certificate exams this year were filled with surprises. Responsibles made sure that everything was organized and they worked hard to prevent cheating, by checking the students' identity, including female students with veils. In addition, if any students committed any infractions during the exams they were dealt with by these ladies that have been selected by the exam's monitoring committees.

The secondary level exams in Egypt were easy and very organized this year, as cheating was completely prevented inside the examination halls, and the male and female students were not allowed to enter the halls for an extended period of time prior to the start of the exams so that the students would not have any opportunity to write down information or notes on the walls or desks, and the toilets and outdoor restrooms were checked prior to the start of every exam on a daily basis in order to ensure that these restrooms and toilets did not have any books or handouts or any reference materials there. Also, the students, and even the professors or those selected to work on the student monitoring committees, were not allowed to carry mobile phones with them into the examination halls, and the high committee for secondary education in Egypt provided the seat numbers to the students with specific instructions to not have with them or bring mobile phones in the examination halls, because this could result in them being penalized for collective cheating and denied from sitting for the exams and prevented from that, and that this could lead to failure in that subject or all subjects that were taken by those students or completely fail the exam. And the high committee and the ministry reaffirmed that the secondary level exams this year will match the level of the male and female students and that there is no justification for cheating, and in case a female student, specifically of course, is suspected of cheating by means of earphones or hands-free Bluetooth headphones that could be used at that time, the committee should be notified in order to verify this situation.

It is obvious that this year’s exams for the secondary level in Egypt is an experimental year, as some students have already taken the sixth year of the basic education level, and the new secondary level is being experimented on these students, and consequently it will be given preference. Until when will education in Egypt remain backward and lagging in this manner? And it is a pity that the students’ fates are at the mercy of the whims of the ministers in this manner regarding the difficulty or ease of the secondary level exams in Egypt. We notice that in March, the students are worried about how to finish the curriculum without having anxieties and tensions, and this is because of the difficulty of the exams, and since every student has many questions in their minds regarding this highly controversial issue, and as such what is happening to these students is wrong, as they do not need more anxiety and trouble, because is it not enough that they have to always endure the anxiety caused by the exams? No, there’s going to be the exams, and the secondary education system is going to be changed, and on top of that an experimental exam! Please, have mercy on those students, and also many students are making the point to his Excellency the Minister regarding the fact that the priorities of reform in the secondary education system should start from the base and not from the top, as if he started with the first year of the primary level and onwards, no one will say anything, but the weird and strange Minister came three months prior to the secondary level exams and turned everything upside down. Please, do not do this, Minister! Until when will the students remain as a field experiment for the authorities? Have mercy on those on earth people, and the one in the sky will have mercy on you!

Many students complain about the high school tests each year, many saying that these examinations has been very different from what has been studied throughout the year, not in subject but in fact, but the worst of the problem lies in the psyche of a student who when he sees a difficult question it affects his mind negatively and he believes that he never saw those questions before even if those questions already existed before. But the problem is that there are some questions that are used in order to let some students excel when it makes the student hit by a psychological condition make it impossible to distinguish the easy from the difficult and this way of putting those questions causes the suffering of the student when he sees those questions. The education system in Egypt as it is still not evolving from what it was before, but it is getting worse year after year. The problem is not in the students alone, but in teachers who fail to perform their jobs and do not work to give the appropriate explanation to students. Because of the lack of appreciation of teachers in Egypt, that makes teachers resort to private lessons in order to work to raise their standard of living. I wish the government would work to rebuild the educational aspect again and work on the development of all sectors in order to change the future of generations to come, for the better.

The exams were this year are as bad as every past year, they did not change the method of developing the questions. The Baccalaureate Exam this year is considered as a farce compared to the previous ones over the last years. In fact, this year’s High School exams are considered as a field-test for the candidate students. In fact, students have been in the third grade of secondary education and have been about to sit for the final exams of the High School. They have also been confident, serious and active enough to sit for these exams which are considered as a psychological war for students as well as parents in Egypt. In fact, parents lose control of themselves and of their nerves. As for students, they are the victims of the acts of the Egyptian Minister of Education. The latter has changed the school curricula, the plans and the laws of exams and the way they are organized resulting in a lot of panic among students. Yet, he has neglected all the calls of the students to deal with or read their appeals that aim to solve the problems that they have faced. As a matter of fact, this year’s High School Exams have been a large and comprehensive messing up for all the concepts and for everything for the poor students. The latter have been obliged to implement the desires of the esteemed Minister. Therefore, the Ministry must examine closely the grievances of the oppressed students who have been wronged by the Minister of Education.

Today, Egypt entered a new era, because all has passed on one side, and what will come will be on the other side. We spent long dark years under leadership of Hosni Mubarak, who astonished the whole world because of the oppression and suppression in the country and looting the money of the people and the riches of the home. The citizens suffered terribly because of the oppression and injustice for long years, as if they were inhuman. The former government of the Arab Republic of Egypt mistreated the Egyptian people and they considered that they are first-class people while the other citizens are inferior to them. They deprived the people of many of their rights and they killed all that is beautiful and bright in the hearts of the Egyptians. The former regime eliminated all the ambition in the hearts of the Egyptians, who found no place for it in the hearts of the Egyptians, while they found no chance for success or jobs or even good houses. There was no glimpse of hope that refers to the approaching dawn. These sad conditions lasted for long years and the youth were waiting for any change helplessly and our conditions were deteriorating. Our silence made him think that he is undefeatable and enraged Mubarak to go on in his oppression, but he forgot that everything has an end and this is what happened, when the Egyptians blew up with anger against the crimes of the deposed president Mubarak and his government. This was the sparkle of our great revolution and all Egyptians took to the streets demanding the fall of the corrupt regime, and its head Mubarak. However, the response of our government to these demands was violent and it reached bloodshed.

Mohamed Morsy could not have reached the post of the President without the young Egyptians who gave their lives during the revolution, in addition to the thousands of injured people and those are the people who should be thanked by Egypt. The duty of President Morsy is to immediately begin achieving a just retribution from the killers of the martyrs, the care of their families and the treatment of the wounded ones at the highest level within Egypt or outside it at the expense of the State. The new President should not leave the wounded people in the revolution child-care to the benefactors. It is not permissible to let the killers of the martyrs remain free while continuing their jobs as if they did not shed the innocent blood of the youth and all of their guilt is that they revolted for the dignity of the Egyptians.

There’s no doubt that the educational organizations have a major role which comes next to the parents' role, and there’s no doubt that school is the other instructor which forms youth’s trends and intellectual development, therefore the educational organizations have an essential and basic role in parental guidance and to protect them from this abhorrent phenomenon which is extremism, still the great role of teachers in directing the generation in different age stages, is an effective role in determining the path they will take. Thus it became necessary to increase the importance of creating methods which activate the factors of healthy thinking while the young manis receiving his education, that needs educational rehabilitation in order to start from a solid point regarding educational instructing for next generations, but what we find today – unfortunately – in governmental schools is information being initiated that the students forgets as soon as the exam is finished, which doesn’t have any positive reflection on his life because of the absence of any method for following up on this information. Here comes the responsibility of the government to activate the education tools and revive its means in order to activate its role in educational guidance and to protect the youth from the spreading of deviant ideas without taking any group measure on that important topic.

Hosni Mubarak took power when Egypt was the leader of the Arab countries and then left it thanks to the free rebels. He left it empty, and corruption, fraud, ignorance and disease are widespread. He is a coward who conspired against his State and his closest friends were the Israelis who cried over his departure.

Frankly speaking, the recent events have deeply affected us. The proof is that two days before the exams, the Minister said that the Secondary General Certificate would not include the current painful events, such as the Port Said Stadium accident, and the Al Jamal battle, so as not to hurt the students' feelings. Truly, the students are right in everything they say. There are pressures on them and on their parents. The situations and circumstances in Egypt did not help them to study this year. It is different from last year, although it was the first year of the revolution; nevertheless, the exams are very difficult for the second stage in particular. All the families are under stress, so we ask the esteemed teachers who check the exams, and the Minister of Education, to keep all these conditions in consideration while checking the papers!
