Al-Qaeda's philosophy is based upon a destructive ideology that does not distinguish between combatants and peaceful civilians, not even women and children, according to Dr. Ahmed Mohammed al-Daghashi, a researcher who studies Islamist groups.
Al-Daghashi said the organisation's biggest problem is that it fights anyone who is at odds with its ideology, even Muslims. Members of al-Qaeda are convinced of the correctness of their thinking and the legitimacy of their actions, and consider individuals with opposing views as deviants.
He spoke with Al-Shorfa about al-Qaeda's teachings and the origins of its ideology, which are also the subjects of his new book, "Al-Qaeda's Pedagogical Approach: A Focus on the Yemeni Situation".
Al-Daghashi, a professor of Islamic pedagogy and philosophy at Sanaa University, has published 18 books on Islamic teachings and has written for a number of local and Arab newspapers.
Al-Shorfa: How would you analyse al-Qaeda's pedagogical approach?
Ahmed Al-Daghashi: I think whoever studies al-Qaeda's philosophy at its roots, its writings, its make-up, development, and the results of its armed struggle can only conclude that al-Qaeda's pedagogical approach can only be described as destructive, not constructive. It is based on false premises, such as the premise that the relationship between Muslims and others is rooted in war and not peace, regardless of whether the 'others' are combatants or peaceful civilians.
Al-Qaeda's biggest problem is that it fights whoever it considers to be at odds with its ideology, even Muslims. We all know what happened and continues to happen in Iraq, where al-Qaeda's victims are civilians, and individuals who are in disagreement with it are Muslims, and not non-Muslim combatants.
The danger of al-Qaeda's jihadist ideology is that it is convinced of the correctness of its thinking, the legitimacy of its positions, and the fallacy and deviance of all who oppose it. This is where al-Qaeda's pedagogical philosophy is applied, specifically its exclusion of individuals who oppose it, thereby legitimising the shedding of their blood and encroachment on their honour.
Al-Shorfa: Why is al-Qaeda targeting the youth through teachings and ideology?
Al-Daghashi: Adolescence is a time of confusion, indecision and inability to make distinctions. This makes it easier for any political or ideological movement to influence the youth. If we observe the so-called accomplished scholars among al-Qaeda's youth, specifically al-Qaeda's second and third generations, most of them are in their 20s which indicates they were molded during adolescence and rose to leadership positions in two or three years.
If we examine the biographies of Abu Basir (Nasir al-Wuhayshi), the leader of al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), or Qasim al-Rimi, the military commander of AQAP, we find that they joined the organisation as teenagers. By the age of 28 or 30 they had spent 10 years in prison or in Afghanistan or elsewhere, so when did they study and acquire the knowledge and leadership qualities needed to become religious experts and leaders?
It is during adolescence and later years when they were exposed to ideas that cause them to become as tenacious, arrogant, and intransigent as they are to the extent that they became resistant to any real influence, even if the evidence is compelling and derived from reason, reality, and the Qu'ran or the biography of the Prophet Mohammed peace be upon him and the way he dealt with his adversaries. Nevertheless, ideological dialogue remains the best way to reach and influence them.
Al-Shorfa: What are the ideological underpinnings of al-Qaeda's drive to wreak havoc on Arab and Muslim countries, notably Yemen?
Al-Daghashi: Al-Qaeda derives its ideological underpinnings from a true but misinterpreted hadith of the Prophet which said, "Expel the Jews and Christians from the Arabian Peninsula."
That hadith should be taken in the objective context in which it occurs. It is intended to mean that there should not be two competing religious authorities in the Arabian Peninsula, and the majority of scholars interpret the reference to the Arabian Peninsula to mean the Hijaz [Mecca and Medina] and are in consensus that Yemen does not fall within that [geographic] space.
If we accept [al-Qaeda's interpretation] of the hadiths, where does that put all the Qu'ranic verses and hadiths that urge us to treat believers of other faiths well, and the term 'Ahl al-Thimma' [referring to free non-Muslims enjoying Muslim protection] whom Islam orders us to treat righteously, a principle that ranks among the highest orders of beneficence, one considered by Allah himself to be as important as obeying one's parents?
Al-Shorfa: What are the underpinnings of al-Qaeda's pedagogical approach?
Al-Daghashi: The key pedagogical cornerstone al-Qaeda relies upon is rooted in Salafi ideology, as it relates to the organisation's founding, its make-up and its sources of knowledge. The Salafi ideology furnished the intellectual origins for al-Qaeda's pedagogical approach.
One element of Salafi thought is its revolutionary, militant approach that believes change can only come about by force, and that peaceful means of change are signs of weakness, submission and betrayal.
Another important element of al-Qaeda's ideology is its penchant for rebellion, confrontation, and accusations against others of apostasy for not applying sharia law without considering whether there was justification for not applying sharia. And even if sharia is applied, it is deemed insufficient if it conflicts with al-Qaeda's assessment of certain issues.
Al-Qaeda's pedagogical approach combines preparing the next generation for jihad in the cause of Allah against all non-Muslim enemy combatants and implementing a distinct agenda among some groups that believe in military combat as a means to achieve goals and imposing their own vision upon opponents through violence and physical force.
Al-Shorfa: Why did al-Qaeda legitimise spilling the blood of women and children even though that is forbidden in battle?
Al-Daghashi: Al-Qaeda permits that on the basis that it is permissible to shed the blood of anyone who supports tyrants who do not rule according to sharia law, regardless of whether they are children or women.
I want to emphasise the psychological aspect as bloodshed becomes commonplace to those who are accustomed to violence, and their only concern becomes to achieve their objective, regardless of whether it results in casualties among innocent [civilians].
Al-Shorfa: Why is al-Qaeda eager to settle in Yemen?
Al-Daghashi: There are doctrinal, political, and geographic factors behind al-Qaeda's quest to settle in Yemen. The doctrinal factor stems from the hadith of the Prophet which stated, "12,000 men from Aden in the cause of God and his Prophet represent the best among mine and Aden's".
Only the superficial, conventional aspect of the hadith was understood, the part addressing weapons and war and not the meaning of comprehensive victory for civilisation or bringing intellectual, social, political, and economic enlightenment to the people.
In terms of geography, Yemen's terrain is attractive for al-Qaeda, as Abu Musab al-Suri, a well-known organisation leader, said. Politically, it relates to Yemen undergoing a period of statelessness and collapse of the political system.
Al-Shorfa: What is the best way to counter al-Qaeda's ideological influence in Yemen?
Al-Daghashi: First, remove the reasons that make al-Qaeda a legitimate option for youth, reform the internal environment politically, economically, socially, culturally and intellectually, and manage the country's relationship with the outside world to ensure that it is a relationship of equals.
Educational institutions, the family, the mosque, political parties, and civil society organisations need to promote peace as a stabilising factor that will undermine al-Qaeda's message.
The Arab Spring revolutions, especially the peaceful popular revolution in Yemen, must be capitalised on and included in scholastic curricula as examples for all their great accomplishments in bringing about peaceful, non-violent change. Those peaceful revolutions proved very effective and had an impact at a lower cost and in a shorter period of time. They should be incorporated in scholastic curricula as a colossal historic and contemporary event worthy of being studied so that succeeding generations can learn from them and serve as an effective means to bring about change.

I like many comments, such as the one written by Aziz Ahmed on 6-16-2012,in which he says: The religious beliefs do not call for killing children and women. On the contrary, they call to protect their dignity, safety and security. Almighty God says in the Qur'an: "Wealth and children are but an adornment of the worldly life." That means they are an adornment, not a scapegoat for the dirty work. We say to the terrorists, there are many children who are sick because of you and your actions. There are many poor families that do not know where to live or where to go because of your profane actions. Today, you say that killing children is jihad in the path of God? What kind of jihad is that? The real jihad is to help your fellow Muslims all around the world.

Who kicked the Russians out of Afghanistan? Who kicked America and the west out of Iraq? Are they you, the people who comment here? Every person is free to have his opinion, but he has to be fair and not a liar.

This talk is lying and slander against al-Qaeda. Al-Daghshi does not know anything about al-Qaeda. He is a frustrated person who is happy to sit and avoid fighting. He describes them as destroyers. No, by God, they are totally unlike this description. The Day of Judgment will rule between you and them, you frustrated, disappointed people, who are hateful of Jihad. A question to al-Daghshi: Can you debate with people who have the least amount of knowledge and status? I will not say you should debate with Aba Basir, because you are not at the same scientific, administrative and organization level as he is. They are "…men who are true to what they promised God. Among them is he who has fulfilled his vow to the death, and among them is he who awaits his chance." -al-Ahzab: 23

The Al-Qaeda terrorist organization has one rule, which is: anyone who does not work with them, his blood is to be shed and he is to be killed in a horrible way, to frighten people and put fear into their hearts. Al-Qaeda contributed through its leaders and its elements to attempt to spread the ideology of terrorism to kill people without justification, and they claim that it is permissible because they are carrying out jihad. What is this jihad that they are talking about? All we have seen is a message from al-Qaeda leaders in which they talk about jihad, and not a single individual of them came out to face the rightful religious scholars who would uncover their lies and dirty tricks, which have become obvious. They use religion as a cover only, and just as a way to fool people and deceive them, especially the youth, rushing impulsively towards the preservation and protection of religion and its principles. But today, everyone has truly abandoned al-Qaeda, and this is what has contributed to the relapse of al-Qaeda and its falling into pieces lately, as in the recent years. Al-Qaeda has revealed all its cards and the truth about it has been exposed. The organization’s leaders thought they had deceived the whole world and that if they killed that way, they would find people following them, but the campaigns conducted by the scholars everywhere to expose al-Qaeda led to good results, such as the restoration of the consciousness and awareness of the youth, and that contributed to the abandonment of al-Qaeda and its deviant ideology.

Every day, the terrorist operations increase in Iraq and following every political move towards democracy we notice that the terrorists start targeting the innocent civilians as well as the police forces and the army. The mastermind and financier of these operations is one party that chose the road of terrorism to achieve their objectives to prevent the emergence of a pluralistic democratic system. This party seeks to make this project fail in order to destabilize the security and stability in Iraq rather than resisting the Alliance Forces. The other objective is an attempt to reproduce the system of mass graves and chemical weapons again. We notice that most of the perpetrators of these operations belong to certain areas in Iraq that allied with the terrorist and takfiri forces that came from abroad with Arab popular and official support.

Religious beliefs do not call for the killing of children and women, but on the contrary, they call for protecting their dignity, their safety and security , and Allah, the Almighty, said in His Holy Book: (Wealth and sons are allurements of the life in this world) if they are allurements and they are not scapegoats for the dirty acts, we say to the terrorists, there are a lot of kids who are sick because of you and of the acts that you perpetrated and there are a lot of poor families that no longer know where to live and where they should go because of your dirty actions. Today, you say that the killing of children is jihad in the name of Allah, what Jihad is this? The real Jihad is to help your Muslim brothers all over the world.

The danger of al-Qaeda and its groups is threatening everybody; it does not differentiate between an innocent person and a guilty one, a friend and an enemy, or an old person and a young one. It is has dark thinking and random direction; it starts from the unknown and goes everywhere. It is not born only in this time; it is the product of successive times and different accumulations. It is not limited to one nation, nor is it exclusive to one religion or one belief. It has existed at all times and in all ages, but it took different shapes, images and types. For example, assassination is a type of terrorism; and killing, destruction and bloodshed are kinds of terrorism. They lead to different kinds and patters of terrorism. Terrorism usually is committed by individuals and groups that feel hatred, force and a lack of balance. It cannot be ended by armies or force only, because it can fortify, hide, cover and gain immunity, but it can be fought by dealing with its reasons and motives and facing it politically and by peaceful means, such as establishing righteousness, spreading freedom, justice and equality among the people, and confronting oppression, tyranny and corruption, which represent the ideal environment for terrorism.

Who looks at the problems of mankind from the time of our father Adam to now finds it because of distance from what Allah has prescribed for His slaves by deviance or distance from the right and inclination to falsehood. The first murder in history, perpetrated by Cain against his brother Abel because of jealousy that is forbidden religiously, the glory all the glory and happiness all the happiness is in adhering to the laws of God and following the true Sunnah and what the good ancestors agreed up on, where they were praised by the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), where he said: (the best of centuries is my century and then those who follow them, then those who follow them).

The terrorists do not respect the sanctity of women and they do not respect anything at all. The most important thing for them is to process their attacks and explosions, with a reason or without. That is all they want to get whatever they are paid for. They are recruiting girls through their wives and using them in some ways. They may threaten them and then insert the terrorist and Jihad ideas into their minds and convince them that they will be champions and they will get a victory for Islam. They read Koranic verses and the sayings of the prophet that talk about Jihad and interpret it in the special way of terrorists in order to close the ways for the girls' minds to exit from the terrorist ideology. These poisoned thoughts terrorists use to benefit from girls and their role in hiding bombs and terrorists attacks. They try to convince them that this will forgive their sins and will bring them nearer to God. This happened due to the lack of awareness of these girls. That is why the role of the Muslim scholars should be more effective in providing advice continuously to girls that the permitted request is not in this way and not by offending people.

What distinguishes the terrorists is the fact that they act as groups. Consequently, they tend to disregard the ideas and the personal choices of the individuals who are directed towards a single goal. In fact, those who act within the framework of the collective spirit may be doing things that their minds would not accept. They might commit acts that do not reflect their individual will and awareness. In many countries, the terrorist groups are made up of people who are ignorant fools. They are easily influenced by the false slogans and the calls for war. Such calls are made in the rallies. They do not even know the seriousness and the consequences of their deeds. Little by little, they join groups involved in perpetrating atrocities. At the moment, these people turn into killers whose hands are stained with blood. They become terrorists who are likely to commit inhumane acts. Some of these people might seem calm and quiet when alone. But, they could turn into criminals when they join a terrorist group. They become likely to kill and commit atrocities for no reason. These “symptoms” usually appear in persons who wish to get rid of their lives for personal reasons. Most of those who participate in acts of violence have a weak will and conscience. They are being directed, like sheep, by the influence of these groups. Thus, they replace the good sense by excessive hatred and a tendency towards violence and aggression. Such people are easily influenced and manipulated. They do not admit any restrictions set by law. Indeed, Islam does not belong to a particular nation or a specific geographic area. In contrast to the belief of the dominant Western world, Islam is not the culture of the East. Islam is the last religion revealed by God to all people to guide them to the path of righteousness. The Muslims are supposed to clarify the concepts of the true religion for all people everywhere in order to help them understand Islam better.
