Radaa's skyline was illuminated by gunfire from residents celebrating al-Qaeda's forced exit from the city Tuesday (January 24th).

Armed elements of the al-Qaeda-affiliated Ansar al-Sharia left Radaa as a result of co-operation between residents and tribes, according to a statement on the Ministry of Defence's website today.

"The mediation efforts were successful because the tribesmen cornered al-Qaeda and their leader, Tariq al-Thahab, and left them with only one option: leaving the city," Sheikh Ali al-Mansoury, deputy administrator of Radaa affairs in al-Baidaa province said. "The Radaa tribes, including al-Thahab's tribe, renounced al-Qaeda's acts and showed a willingness to fight in order to drive out the armed group. They also wanted to save the city from a state of war and conflict, especially after military reinforcements, including tanks and heavy artillery, arrived in preparation for an attack by the army against these elements."

Al-Mansoury said if al-Qaeda had remained in Radaa this would have meant "certain suicide for the group, which is why al-Thahab did not have much leverage, and the requests he made to the tribal committee were quite simple".

He said tribal mediation succeeded in reaching an agreement with the group's emir Tariq al-Thahab and his armed men to withdraw from Radaa in return for releasing his brother, Nabil al-Thahab along with two others.

"Nabil was detained by Syrian authorities and handed over to Yemen several years ago. The prisoners were transferred to Radaa on Tuesday," al-Mansoury said.

Al-Mansoury said he took over the government facilities that were seized, on Wednesday in the presence of the tribal leaders. Al-Qaeda fighters had taken control of these facilities on January 14th, including the national security and political security headquarters, and other government buildings.

Al-Mansoury said Yemeni forces are now stationed in the Ameriya School and the Ameriya Castle, previously occupied by al-Qaeda fighters.

He added that Radaa's tribes killed 12 al-Qaeda members since they entered the city.

Sheikh Ali al-Tairi, leader of the al-Arsh tribe, told Al-Shorfa that tribal mediators, led by Sheikh Hashid al-Qawsi, in tandem with the committee formed from the seven Radaa directorates, had a direct effect on al-Thahab's decision to leave the city.

Citizens negative response to al-Qaeda key factor

"The most important factor behind al-Qaeda's withdrawal from the city was the negative response they received from residents and tribes of the seven directorates of Radaa to their demands, and the resulting mobilisation against their agenda," al-Tairi said.

Ali Zain, one of the elders in Radaa, told Al-Shorfa the city skyline was illuminated by gunfire from residents who were celebrating al-Qaeda's exit. He said the city has now quieted down and life has begun to return to normal.

"The fact that the residents of Radaa stood united against terrorist plans was the decisive factor in al-Qaeda's expulsion from Radaa and prevented them from establishing an Islamic emirate here," he said.

We should be taking extreme precautions from these two aspects and that the tribal leaders should adhere with the citizens in order for them to not be deceived and be misled under a lot of deception, and should be directed for the well-being and goodness of their country. Therefore, I am with the idea that the tribes fight and confront al-Qaeda in Yemen, and that everybody pulls through together for the sake of their country. They are the wedge, which their state relies on, in addition to providing great cooperation by the Yemeni people. All of the success, conservation, security, and stability are for our brothers on the land of Yemen.

The group al-Qaeda is working on the exploitation of such circumstances in all the Arab countries, especially countries that have seen a lot of chaos and turmoil. For this reason, addressing these elements comes from the people first and the tribes and clans must maintain the security of all the regions in addition to protecting people and directing them to welfare, stability, and tranquility. Thus, everyone should stand together and hear what the tribal leaders say and it should not be permitted for any party or group to impose their control or power over the Yemeni people because they are the holders of their rights. Everyone is under pressure and they need money and reformation. The terrorist groups are always working on the two sides as an attempt to deceive a lot of the people first by providing money to everyone who is recruited and also to talk about the matters of reform of the situation by fighting governments as well as using jihad and religion. All of this makes the Yemeni people obey the dictates of the groups and factions of the terrorist al-Qaeda network.

What the tribes of the State of Yemen are working on to face, fight, and address all the elements of al-Qaeda is the best proof of their determination and their insistence on maintaining their own country from any outsider or groups that would like to inflict harm and damage to their country and the sons of their people. For this reason, I would like to preach to the State of Yemen that there were unity and genuine cooperation between the clans, tribes, Yemeni security forces, army, and police. Certainly, there will be a secure and stable situation to protect from any terrorist attacks, bombings, killings, kidnappings, attacks on the citizens, stealing, or even discrimination between the people of Yemen. Therefore, it is very important that the Yemeni tribes work on this matter and provide all that is necessary for maintaining order and security as well as stability to eliminate any appearance of the armed and terrorist groups that want to start tampering, retaliation, and destruction of the State of Yemen on the grounds that it is going through difficult, very harsh, and bitter circumstances as a result of the revolution against the unjust government, and demanding all their rights to eradicate poverty, hunger, corruption, unemployment, and the provision of all services to the people of Yemen.

All people are required to stand together and cooperate strongly not to deceive the people through the religious, and financial methods, or any other method used by Al-Qaeda to deceive the people and trick the youth to recruit them to carry out terrorist operations against the Yemeni women, children, men, and elders in return for money. This issue is extremely important for the unemployed youth. Therefore, this necessitates fighting all the negative aspects in the life of the Yemeni citizen not to force him to join the terrorist groups in order to meet their daily needs. This is the heavy responsibility of the Yemeni tribes, which must hold steadfast to patience and endurance to confront all the malicious elements of Al-Qaeda terrorist organization.

The Yemeni tribes have sufficient capability to contribute to the protection of the security of Yemen and its people and confront Takfiri terrorist groups and their atrocious acts. These tribes need material and good weaponry support only, which will enable them to execute their national duty more effectively. Then, they will be able to protect the unity and security of Yemen from the al-Qaeda-led terrorist campaign, which aims at exploiting the internal condition to increase its influence and therefore make Yemen a new pivot from which it can launch its terrorist operations in Yemen and other neighboring countries. As declared, this terrorist organization is trying to lay down the foundation of its own emirate in Yemen, but the Yemeni tribes played an essential role in foiling this bloody terrorist scheme. Thus, I think the Yemeni tribes possess the ability to shoulder such national and historical responsibility of confronting al-Qaeda in Yemen.

Many Yemeni cities have been dominated by the terrorist occupation of the cowardly al-Qaeda. In fact, we must find a solution to the operations taking place in Yemen. Unfortunately, even the Yemeni tribes will not be able to do anything in order to return Yemen to its pristine state. These tribes do not have any role whatsoever in Yemen. They are mere silent tribes which can do nothing. If they were able to do anything, they would rid Yemen of these terrorists and their operations. As far as I am concerned, all the acts taking place in the country are the outcome of the spiteful and coward regime. We have to find a solution to this predicament and all people must join efforts in order to eradicate terrorism and terrorists. With God’s will, we will get rid of them once and for all. God will help in good and in bad times

If the groups of al-Qaeda had taken an interest in the Muslims’ interest we will not witness the displacement of a hundred thousand Yemenis in Abyan. In fact, we must not forget that the armed groups have changed their name from al-Qaeda to al-Shariaa Supporters because al-Qaeda’s crimes have become obvious. Despite the change of name, Yemenis do not accept them. The truth is the displacement has reached Radaa and the leaders of al-Qaeda have pretended al-Jihad for the sake of the Muslims. However, in reality, they have worked on displacing them. The Prophet Muhammad opened Makkah which included unbelievers and infidels. What has he done? Did he kill them? Did he insult them? Did he give them security and safety? In fact, he had lived peacefully with them despite his victory and power as well as their weakness. He was kind to them and he did not displace them or violate their properties. He also dealt with them in a humane manner. However, the poisonous organization of al-Qaeda has nothing to do with Islam. They are only related to aggressiveness and brutality. They have no conscience because they have claimed Muslims’ lives. They have also pretended that God has ordered them to do this. In fact, al-Qaeda has chosen Pakistan and Afghanistan not because of their beautiful landscapes but for the sake of drugs.

All Yemeni people must work hard in order to save Yemen from the terrorists of al-Qaeda who do not want the well being of Yemen and the Yemenis. In fact, Yemen has become among the worst countries. It is not possible to remain silent because of this. In fact, the Yemeni tribes have worked against the cowardly al-Qaeda organization. I think that this is among their duties. They have carried out the best operations and all Yemenis must stand against terrorism and terrorists. This is in order to find a solution by any means.

These tribes were cooperating with the army in the battles in which the terrorists have been defeated. Moreover, these tribes contributed to keeping some cities from falling into the hands of the terrorist al-Qaeda organization. Therefore, the role that these Yemeni tribes played in this area is a great role and it deserves to be praised. I think that we can depend on the Yemeni tribes to control the regions and the cities in which they live, if they are provided all kinds of support so as to be ready to face any criminal attempts from the terrorist al-Qaeda organization, at least at this stage, till the end of the government elections in Yemen and the return of security and stability in this country again, so that the people could live in security and stability, more than they do today. The role of the tribes is important and great, and we appreciate the efforts exerted by the tribes. We think that they do not lack anything except being provided with the capabilities to be able to face any of the challenges that threaten the safety and the security of Yemen and its people.

The attempt of the Arab tribes to work to confront the terrorist al-Qaeda organization in Yemen is one of the attempts which prove the extent of the keenness of the original Yemeni Arab tribes to maintain security and stability in Yemen. I think that the Yemeni tribes realize the extent of danger which will happen to them and to their country if it is controlled by the terrorist al-Qaeda organization and the criminal elements which work under the supervision of this organization. I think that these attempts are due to the responsibility that these tribes feel is incumbent upon them. Our Arab community is a tribal community; therefore, these tribes have a lot of responsibilities, which can contribute to building the community, as well as providing security to it, through sharing with the tribespeople to protect the community and to address the terrorist remnants. The Yemeni tribes have carried out the greatest role while fighting the Al-Qaeda organization in Yemen and in various Yemeni cities and governorates. This includes Zinjibar city and other cities in which the brave Yemeni tribes have played the greatest role in fighting the terrorism and infidel remnants, which have exploited the deteriorated security condition in Yemen during the past period, so as to show itself as a major manipulator in some of the Yemeni governorates.

The U.S. army has entered the war against this organization in many places. It follows its elements and contributes to eliminating them, as well as hitting the remnants of terrorism, and it reveals a lot of the plans which have been thwarted by some of the countries, due to the U.S. cooperation with them in the field of information exchange. Therefore, America has played a great role in fighting terrorism as well as the Takfiri Al-Qaeda organization.

It is important to put an end to terrorism. This is in order to make the Middle East free of terrorism and terrorists, and to keep the people safe. How can a hundred thousand people live in a state of displacement? In fact, this is a difficult situation. May God help the people to get rid of al-Qaeda in order to achieve stability. It is important to imprison all those who have been involved with al-Qaeda. Besides, it is important to execute all those who have shed the innocent blood especially since they have claimed the lives of all those who opposed their limited ideas and beliefs.

It is quietly known to everyone that, in the meantime, al-Qaeda has become more dangerous on the region than the Mongols/Tatars. It is clear from al-Qaeda's acts that it has studied the plans that the Mongols and Tatars were adopting, developed them according to the current situation, and then set out on displacing countries and killing people. However, Arab tribes have refused to surrender and succumb to these barbaric and monstrous groups, and decided to resist them everywhere with whatever means they have because people in Yemen are convinced that, instead of being dragged out of their houses like sheep and slaughtered, they have to unite and face al-Qaeda with whatever power they have. Victory is not achieved by means of preparations and numbers, but through the belief in the justice of the cause and the determination to achieve victory as well as stand up against every aggressor that seeks to kill the innocent people. This is the time when the spirit becomes highly motivated and triumph will be achieved. Indeed, several victories have been achieved by the Arab tribes against al-Qaeda in several Yemeni cities. It was driven out and security forces were able to enter these cities and re-control government departments as well as the police and military headquarters, which had been occupied by al-Qaeda members before they were expelled from these cities by the Arab tribes. In order to make these tribes stronger, the government should provide them with weapons and equipment to engage them with security forces to confront al-Qaeda and expel it out of all Yemeni land.

The Arab tribes in Yemen have taken the responsibility of taking on the al-Qaeda organization and fighting it, in spite of their humble capabilities. They have managed to achieve victory against the al-Qaeda remnants through their participation with the armed forces in fighting al-Qaeda in Abyan governorate, as they have taken place in the fighting operations which happened in Zinjibar city; this is considered one of the fiercest battles. This heroic act was a result of the belief of the Arab tribes' people in the justice of their cause in standing in the face of this criminal organization. This was the main reason behind the destruction to which Yemen has been exposed. It makes most of the Arab tribes announce their support for the men of the security forces, so as to defend the country everywhere, through the pledges and the charters which they have taken upon themselves, in not dealing or cooperating with the al-Qaeda organization elements in the country, and working on fighting them so as to get them out of the cities in which they are centralized. This way, the al-Qaeda organization could be driven out of many Yemeni cities, thanks to the heroic stance of the tribes’ people, who cannot do this without the participation of the armed forces with them, so as to achieve this aim.

The Arab tribes are considered the major cornerstone in the Arab societies, due to the customs and the traditions that these tribes hold. They cannot leave them or do without them. The most important of these customs is defending the country from all the attacking elements, whether internally or externally, even if this makes it lose the best of what it has, which is its soul, the money and the children. Moreover, these tribes are always emphasizing, through holding the tribal meetings with each other, the need to ensure national unity, so as to defend the country and to protect its land from the external and the internal aggression which is represented in the appearance of the criminal organizations and gangs, such as the terrorist al-Qaeda organization, which presents a great danger to the Yemeni territory and its people. Therefore, we see that the Yemeni tribes have taken a unified stance to address the terrorist al-Qaeda organization, which is seeking to establish its own state in Yemen, so as to suppress its people and enslave them and make Yemen a base for its criminal acts against the other countries, which enjoy security. This way, there will be a disaster in the region, especially in Yemen, which has been exposed to military acts which will destroy everything for which it is indispensable.

As an Iraqi citizen, I strongly criticize the criminal acts that are practiced by Al-Qaeda in Yemen. It uses the dirtiest means in dealing with the innocent. This illustrates the deviant and non-human approaches adopted by these criminal gangs, which threaten people’s lives in Yemen because they are characterized by violence and the use of illegitimate means of power against the unarmed innocent people, which end their lives and spread fear, terror and desperation among them. The Al-Qaeda terrorist acts have become one of the most dangerous criminal phenomena that threaten people everywhere. It leads to the destruction of human, moral and religious values in addition to the spread of corruption, deviation and misguidance among people through these aggressive, violent acts against innocent civilians with the aim of weakening the morale in communities through all the dirty means they use to achieve their objectives.

Everything that the criminal and cowardly organization of al-Qaeda is carrying out in Yemen is rejected, and it is condemned by everybody. They are trying to create a kind of terror and fear inside the Yemeni citizen and make him submit to it and the ideas of this diseased and blasphemous organization through those matters that they are carrying out. We have gotten used to them being carried out by al-Qaeda elements, first so as to act upon the people who are applying the religion, and second so as to terrify the people with the idea that they could be exposed to the operations that al-Qaeda is carrying out against the innocent people, like whipping, cutting their hands off and other crimes. Not to mention the assassinations and the stealing, the murder and the bombings; but we feel secure, and if we lose our lives, we will be martyrs with God. Who does not wish to be a martyr and to witness al-Qaeda’s crimes? Those acts which they carry out and what they prepare for, or with which they are trying to gain a media echo, which is their announcement that they are controlling wide areas in south Yemen and their announcement that there is a state for them there. These are mere lying matters only, and al-Qaeda will end very soon in Yemen. Yemen will not be fertile ground for the al-Qaeda organization at all, for it to build itself up here on our territory, or to have terrorist cells. That is because all our youth hate terrorism and its ideas. In addition, the united Yemeni tribes have realized that and have become aware of the importance of this step and cooperation in helping to defeat terrorism. They revolted before the army revolted; they demanded the follow-up on the terrorists and that they be killed and not given a single opportunity to stay on Yemeni territory.

Al-Qaeda tried many methods to control Yemen, such as seizing control over many cities and provinces such as Abyan and Zinjibar to declare their Islamic emirate before they withdrew as a result of the interference of the tribal leaders. Al-Qaeda in Yemen sought to control the sources of oil in southern Yemen. The members of al-Qaeda adopted a policy of physical extermination against its enemies. Al-Qaeda started its battle in Abyan with a series of assassinations that targeted the intelligence officers in Aden Governorate, Lahj and Abyan, following the success of Al-Qaeda in infiltrating these institutions. Al-Qaeda exploited the state of security and political instability in the Yemeni arena and imposed control over the areas of their influence. The acts of violence that started after the fall of Zinjibar, the largest city in Abyan province, under the control of militants that have links with Al-Qaeda, provoked the tribes to start gathering forces to confront Al-Qaeda, after it had been welcomed in the past. The unannounced alliance between the tribes and the state tightened the grip around Al-Qaeda and led to a decline in their attacks. Al-Qaeda had to change its thoughts and policies, to tighten its control and cooperate with the Yemeni people before they turn against it. Al-Qaeda has to realize that violence and assassinations will negatively affect it and the entire society.
