Osama bin Laden was well aware that al-Qaeda had become synonymous with terrorism [Ho New/Reuters]
Osama bin Laden lived largely in isolation after he went into hiding in Abbottabad, Pakistan in 2006, according to statements from family members who were taken into custody by Pakistani authorities after bin Laden was killed by a team of U.S. Navy Seals on May 2nd.
While he was physically isolated from the outside, bin Laden understood what was going on in the world. He was well aware that his organisation had become synonymous with terrorism and was alienating people instead of drawing support.
That is the conclusion U.S. officials drew from a letter they said bin Laden prepared on his computer, which was confiscated along with several other documents from his home in Abbottabad. The letter reveals that bin Laden was cognizant of the need to "re-brand" al-Qaeda to include changing the organisation's name so the new name would not carry the stigma attached to the old one.
It's not known if bin Laden sent the letter to other al-Qaeda leaders. Whether or not he successfully dispatched the letter before his death, the letter confirms that the al-Qaeda leader was aware of the damage the organisation wrought on numerous Islamic causes or else he wouldn't have considered changing its name.
Bin Laden was apparently aware that al-Qaeda had sustained serious damage, and not just as a result of military strikes against it throughout the world, notably the Afghanistan-Pakistan border areas where al-Qaeda is believed to maintain its headquarters. Bin Laden said in the letter that he no longer knew who the leaders of al-Qaeda were because most of the individuals he knew had been killed or apprehended. More than anything else, the practices of al-Qaeda's own members are what caused the greatest damage to the organisation.
The practices of the al-Qaeda in Iraq affiliate alienated a large segment of their base of support that was supposed to provide it with protection. Such was the case with the Sunni insurgent groups who preferred to co-operate with the Americans rather than throw support to Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the former emir of al-Qaeda in Mesopotamia.
The same applies to many of the practices of the organization's branches around the world, which are now being viewed as a threat to Muslims themselves, as a result of bombings that often claimed the lives of innocent Muslims, even if the targets of those bombings were government officials, or in some cases, foreign tourists.
There is no doubt that bin Laden was also aware that al-Qaeda's actions not only pit a wide segment of ordinary Muslims against it, but also compelled prominent jihadi theorists to take tough stances against the organisation. A prime example is Dr. Fadl, the jihadi theorist whose books were used by al-Qaeda in its training camps. Other well- known jihadis turned against al-Qaeda including figures in Egypt (the leaders of the Islamic Group), Libya (the leaders of the Islamic Fighting Group), and Saudi Arabia (a group of known religious leaders whom the authorities presented on television to explain the reasons behind rescinding their support of al-Qaeda).
Bin Laden and other al-Qaeda leaders may have initially thought that some of the criticism was unfair or that it was a product of coercion because the critics were being detained by the authorities. He must have realised at a later stage that the criticism directed at his organisation by those parties was based upon a conviction that its practices are wrong, and more importantly, that their criticism was disastrous to the organisation.
But would a name change be of benefit if the organization does not change its practices?
In reality, there are numerous living examples illustrating that superficial changes do not lead to real change unless they are accompanied by substantial changes.
In the 1990s, the "Armed Islamic Group" was a name that instilled terror into the hearts of Algerians. The organisation had committed - or claimed responsibility for - a series of crimes and indiscriminate bombings during that decade. The group's violent tactics undercut the legitimacy of carrying arms against the government.
At that point in time, a number of leaders of the militant group decided to split from the group with the aim of changing course and ending the policy of killing civilians. The splinter group discovered that would not be possible if they continued to operate under the name Armed Islamic Group, prompting them to change the name of their organisation to the Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat (also known by the French acronym GSPC) in 1999.
When the GSPC was founded, the damage to jihad had reached an advanced stage, which negated the benefit of creating a new organisation to continue a standing policy that had proven to be a failure (the policy of continuing to fight the regime and declaring it infidel).
A section of the GSPC leadership, including the former emir, Hassan Hattab, attempted after 2001 to pursue reconciliation with the government and end the fighting, but a rival section of the leadership refused and took over the reins of the group. In 2003 the rival faction began integrating the group in stages with al-Qaeda and the global jihad network.
The same pattern occurred in Iraq where the local al-Qaeda affiliate sustained severe damage as a result of al-Zarqawi's practices, especially the indiscriminate bombings. Under pressure from senior al-Qaeda leadership in Waziristan, al-Zarqawi agreed to change the name from al-Qaeda to the Mujahideen Shura, an organisation that paved the way for the emergence of the Islamic State of Iraq between 2006 and 2007.
However, changing the name to the Mujahideen Shura and operating under the umbrella of the Islamic State of Iraq did not mean much because the tactics in the field had not changed, even after al-Zarqawi's death in 2006. The policy of suicide bombings that kill innocent citizens continued even though the targets were Iraqi government soldiers or foreign troops.
Apparently the al-Qaeda leadership in Yemen was aware of bin Laden’s concept of a name change, or at least a "confluence of ideas" existed between them, even if no direct communication took place.
It has been recently observed that al-Qaeda no longer operates under the name Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, opting to call itself Supporters of Sharia instead, a move clearly aimed at garnering public support from citizens who would not be inclined to say if they are opposed to Sharia.
It is not clear whether the Supporters of Sharia name will effect any change in al-Qaeda's practices, and reports from Yemen do not indicate that fundamental changes are occurring. Al-Qaeda previously issued judgments against individuals convicted of violations according to the group's interpretation of Islamic law.
The new emir of al-Qaeda, Ayman al-Zawahiri, may had already received bin Laden’s message before his death. But even if he hadn’t received it, he likely has become aware of it after its content was published in the media. Would the new emir of al-Qaeda resort to changing the name of the organisation, as proposed by bin Laden, or would he continue to operate under the old name?
Whatever his decision, he is no doubt aware that al-Qaeda's practices, under any name, are no longer acceptable to a large segment of jihadis who previously supported the organisation, nor are they acceptable to the average Arab citizen who could change a ruling regime without recourse to al-Qaeda. There are those who believe that this organisation was probably one of the factors that contributed to the ruling regimes maintaining a tight grip on power over the years.

Al-Qaeda has demolished the country over the past years and worked on killing a lot of innocent citizens very clearly on purpose. Their intent is to frighten the innocent people and to provoke fear in their minds through dirty acts, a lot of crimes and suicide attacks. Al-Qaeda aims at killing the largest possible number of innocent people of this country. Who are these people to kill lay people who go out to search for a living for their families and young people who are going to their jobs or to study in universities? Their fate would be murder in those damned explosions that accompanied us throughout the past nine years. We are Muslims. These dogs and monkeys are killing our children in cold blood and do not care about the punishment of the afterlife for what their terrorist organizations are doing or that the law will be chasing them because they are people without conscience and without awareness. They have become addicted to terrorism, crime, and murder. These became fun for them, especially when they see the bloodshed and the body parts flying here and there. Is this their jihad? O foolish people, go to hell with your jihad because it is not the Jihad of righteousness or the Jihad of Islam, which Allah ordered us to do.

The terrorists use different and malicious ways in order to recruit citizens of different nationalities. They deceive these people and lure them with money, as well as playing the chord of religion and swaying a few young people who tend to be a little on the religious side but did not have a religious culture that would protect them from the evils of these criminals. Therefore, some of them fall into the trap of terrorism and thus become one of them. This is what we found here in Iraq, where the Iraqi Security Forces have arrested a lot of Arab terrorists from various Arab nationalities in Iraq in general, especially in Baghdad, where they were brought from outside Iraq and were sent to training camps located in some countries that do not want the best for Iraq. They try to create chaos in the country so that it will not develop and prosper because they know the experience in Iraq, in terms of dropping the dictatorship and transforming the situation into a democratic one. They do not wish this experience to succeed in their own countries because they will lose power. Therefore, they provide support to terrorism so that the situation in Iraq fails. They train and provide them with support, and then they send them to Iraq. They start performing criminal acts and targeting innocent people as well as the infrastructure of the country. The security forces have followed these terrorist organizations and arrested a large number of Arab terrorists. The government must prosecute them and show their confessions about these countries that provide support for them to international courts as well as the international community in order to put pressure on those countries that do not want the best for Iraq.

Many people have different opinions on this subject and different conclusions on the issue of whether Osama ibn Laden’s Yemeni wife is complicit in his crimes or not. This depends on whether these crimes were committed with her participation, or if she was a wife, only serving her husband, and one who couldn’t help anything. Was it proven that she was really involved in the acts that claimed the lives of many innocent people who had no hand in what happened? Should she be imprisoned after her return to Yemen? This depends on what the laws stipulate via the criminal court in Yemen, and whether or not it is necessary to punish all the wives of murderers who killed many people, and whether or not she was complicit in committing crimes, or if she worked with them. Did she recruit women, for example? Did she direct and plan for the women’s part of suicide bombers who blew themselves up? If this is proven, it will certainly be very necessary to punish Osama ibn Laden’s wife and to put her in jail. If the contrary is proven, though, it is not necessary to punish a person who wasn’t involved in a criminal act, even if they lived with a criminal, because they don’t have a stake in what happened. We have to remember that she’s a mere woman and that the real, tolerant Islam doesn’t accept that those who didn’t do anything wrong be punished, especially if that person is a helpless woman, if it is proven that she did not take part in committing or doing anything criminal. In general, opinions are different here on this issue, and there is much talking being done by those related to this matter represented by the citizens who hate Osama ibn Laden and those who supported him. Therefore, what should happen is for the judicial system to do its work regarding this issue, to figure out what’s right and what should be done, along with verifying the evidence.

What happened and what this person, Osama bin Laden, did, was really very terrible, violent and criminal, because he was the reason behind people’s death and behind the shedding of their blood in different and violent ways. He was the topic of the hour for this era we live in, which witnessed the death of many people at the hands of Osama bin Laden, who harmed innocent people who had done nothing wrong, and who were victims of violence and crimes and of everything that happened, especially in Iraq. Iraqis have witnessed many bloody and terrible human massacres that exhausted the Iraqi people and were the reason behind their displacement. Osama bin Laden was a reason behind planting division and hatred among people and creating despicable sectarianism and tearing apart the unity of the people because they come from different religions, in addition to planting hatred among people so that everyone would kill one another to destroy each other. This is what Osama bin Laden has been doing, which was the first and main reason behind the spreading of the terrorist cowardly al-Qaeda’s groups, elements and gangs in all countries. These groups used to execute everything asked of them, though recruiting youth and exploiting them by deceiving them in the name of Islam, using the need of many of them for money and the fact that they are jobless. As such, they were deceived and embroiled to execute the operations asked of them. If any of them refused, they were killed for refusing to comply with the orders. Therefore, all the biggest criminal terrorist, Osama bin Laden who ended up dying, did, was to inflict death, harm, pain, terror, worry and horror on the hearts of many innocent people, who were victims of these cowardly criminal acts. All this was for nothing, because in the end, all the elements and groups of the terrorist al-Qaeda organization will be destroyed and this name will disappear and nobody will remember it anymore. They have started weakening and becoming more lenient, as they no longer control the people who have all figured out the truth now about their falsehood that they used to deceive many people.

This is due to the terrorist practices of the criminal organization of Al-Qaeda. These practices have caused a tragic situation, especially due to the existence of these criminal cells in the country. In fact, these criminal cells have achieved the terrorist organization’s agenda. They have also tried to spread their criminal ideas in our societies. Thus, we are all suffering from the criminality of Osama bin Laden. This is due to the terrorist practices of these criminals, who belong to the terrorist organization of al-Qaeda. In fact, they have targeted Iraqis with assassinations, improvised explosive devices, or IEDs, booby-trapped cars and sticky bombs that have resulted in hundreds of innocent martyrs and disabled people. This is in addition to the suffering of the Iraqi families. This has increased people’s suffering and miseries, especially with the destruction of the country and its wealth, due to the criminal plans of Osama bin Laden and his gangs. In fact, these people have worked on sowing fear and instability, and they have claimed Iraqis’ lives. Thus, may God punish this criminal and his terrorist organization.

But they are wrong, because Muslims are tough and they could crush terrorism, because it attacked them and their religion. That is why al-Qaeda started to kill Muslims everywhere, in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen and other countries. These countries are the best evidence of the crimes of al-Qaeda against Muslims. We curse the unbeliever bin Laden and those who worked and still work in this terrorist organization. The curse of the innocent blood that was shed because of them will never tolerate them, and they will be judged in this world and in the Hereafter.

They have also frightened and intimidated innocent people. This has caused many problems for Muslim people. They have indiscriminately carried out killings of Muslims, especially in Iraq. Indeed, Iraq has been exposed to many acts of murder, extermination and displacement. This will tarnish the image of the Islamic religion before the non-Muslim countries. The latter have a wrong idea about the tolerance of Islam, which has been tarnished by the bad practices of this deviant organization, which is carrying out its activities in the name of the Islamic religion. However, religion has nothing to do with this terrorist and extremist organization. They take advantage of religion and use it as a cover to justify their criminal acts, which are contrary to the human values approved by the heavenly religions and the social systems, in order to care for human beings, preserve them and ensure their freedom and legitimate rights to live in peace under the umbrella of the Islamic religion. As a matter of fact, the Islamic religion enjoins the provision of security and good for all people from the various religions. Besides, Islam commands all people to be loving brothers. There should be neither aggression, nor assault, nor contempt and rivalry between people. Moreover, brotherhood is only achieved by following the right path, achieving stability, serenity and happiness, and keeping away from the path of separation, loss and fragmentation. The value of a Muslim is achieved by showing piety towards God, not harming other people, and doing good deeds and being kind to people in society. One should not behave like Al Qaeda members, who carry out evil deeds which lead to the disintegration of societies and to the dissemination of hatred and resentment among people. They aim to weaken communities and thus more easily dominate their economic wealth. This has made societies suffer from poverty and loss, and the spread of “takfiri ideology”.

The misunderstanding of the texts of the Sunnah, Torah, and Bible that speak about the turbulence that will happen in the last days and the signs of the Final Hour made Muslim scholars and religious leaders commit fatal errors. For example, some of them were driven into supporting the 9/11 attacks, though they had no hand in these attacks. Rather, they built their stance on the term “Axis of Evil” that was coined by Bush, who is ignorant about the signs of the hour that are mentioned in the Torah and the Bible. This saying made Sheikh Osama bin Laden interpret it in the light of the text of the hadith: “…until the people become two camps; one is the camp of faith…” The other reason was the fact that al-Qaeda’s birth was close to the Taliban, which also applies to Sheikh Azzam, Sheikh Walid Al-Ani and Sheikh Ahmad Al-Kawfahi. Hence, I think that it is necessary for Al-Zawahiri to carefully read the texts about the turbulence and great wars at the end of times, as well as their contemporary or future interpretations, to build the strategy of al-Qaeda based on them. This requires Al-Zawahiri to conclude a truce with the Romans, i.e. the West and the USA, and then use the forces of al-Qaeda to fight those who alter the Quran, curse the honorable companions day and night, and slander the pure wives of the Prophet, peace be upon him. He also should defend the honor of the Syrians and their blood by threatening to use the death squads of Al-Asad and the legions of the Safawis. He should declare that he is doing so to protect the land of the Two Holy Mosques. This is the correct order or steps of the strategy, instead of starting with the war against the Romans, about whom the Prophet, peace be upon him, said that they would reconcile with us to fight a common enemy. This has already happened during the Afghan Jihad. Europe and the USA supported the mujahidin. Hence, Sheikh al-Zawahiri must realize that the real threat to the Muslim world today is posed by the Safawis and the tyrants of the children of Israel, rather than Europe or the USA. Now, we are living in the time of Abdullah, the father of al-Mahdi, who is going to build the Islamic entity and pave the way for the accomplishment of God’s promise to the Palestinians and the Israelis. Both the Israelis and the Arabs will live under his rule, after conquering Jerusalem justly and happily. Therefore, we should instruct the Arab and Islamic peoples to realize that the stage of the war against the Romans has ended and that we have now started the stage of protecting the Muslims. We should also send messages to the good Israelis that we do not seek to annihilate them, but we will treat them mercifully, as stated in the Quran, and prevent them from killing and oppressing the others.
