The Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) announced on Monday (March 14th) that 66% of the initial results from the March 7th parliamentary election have been tallied.

"Sixty-six percent of the results were announced using the electronic display method via large screens at the IHEC centre and everyone can have a look at them," IHEC official spokesperson Qassim al-Abboudi said.

"The remaining results will be completed in the next few days with the arrival of results of poll of Iraqis abroad from 12 countries," al-Abboudi added.

"The results of eight countries have arrived in Baghdad, and there are still 4 other countries."

Officials estimate that 62.5% of eligible Iraqis voted, a turn-out higher than in many Western elections.

The results show that Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's State of Law Coalition leads in seven provinces, while former Prime Minister Ayad Allawi's al-Iraqiyah list is leading in five provinces. The Iraqi National Alliance led in two provinces, and the Kurdish Alliance led in three provinces -- Arbil, Duhok and Sulaymaniyah.

Hamdia al-Hussain, head of IHEC's election department, said that "the electoral commission plans to announce the initial results as soon as possible. As to the final results, they will have to be approved by the Federal Court as per the Iraqi constitution."

"All sides must be patient and allow the electoral commission enough time to verify the results in order to preserve the integrity of the poll," al-Hussaini added.

Al-Hussain noted that the electoral commission has received 1,078 complaints from across Iraq about special voting, general voting and overseas voting, which is about half the number of complaints received in 2005.

"Our work is transparent and public in front of all people," she said. "We welcome any UN or international figure to come and see how the process is going with all transparency and democratic style."

Peace be upon you. We do not want a turbaned government loyal to Iran. We call on the new government to consider the interests of the Iraqi people and to stop loans with exorbitant interest rates, especially in the housing market.

Peace be upon you! My brothers, I am from Egypt, and I do care about the interest of Iraq, firstly, because it is an Islamic country; secondly, because it is an Arab country. I lived in Iraq for a period of time, and I found that all Iraqi provinces suffered some problems (of course, the magnitude of these problems varied from one province to another). Yet, I noticed that the most quiet and stable provinces were the Kurdish ones. They enjoyed stability and security. An evidence of this fact is that the only soccer championship held in Iraq was held in the city of Arbil in the Kurdistan region. This is a testimony to the good performance of the people in charge in these provinces. So, why don't we consider the idea of giving the opportunity to a Kurdish party to form the next cabinet?! In this case, we may see the calm and stability that exist in the Kurdistan Region prevail in all areas of Iraq. We may see Iraq returning to its former status as a great Arab and Islamic country with no sectarianism or ethnic strife. Some people may ask, “How can the Kurds rule over the Arabs?!” The answer is that the Kurdistan Region is an Iraqi region that is located within the Iraqi borders. The Iraqis are all one people. The President of the country is even Kurdish. So, the Prime Minister can also be Kurdish. He/she may choose some non-Kurdish ministers, whether Sunnis or Shias, and form a popular coalition free from sectarianism and ethnic strife. I truly want to see Iraq return to how it was in the past.
