Only a few hours before breaking their fasts Monday (July 23rd), thousands of Iraqis began bidding farewell to the victims of attacks that killed 91 people and injured 211 others nationwide earlier in the day, according to figures from the Iraqi Interior Ministry.

Funeral services in some cities turned into processions condemning al-Qaeda and other terrorist groups as citizens called on the government to capture the perpetrators.

"The government has instructed all security units in the country to respond swiftly to al-Qaeda's crimes and severely punish its members," said Ali al-Dabbagh, the Iraqi government spokesperson Tuesday.

He urged citizens to increase their co-operation with security forces.

In Baghdad's Sadr City, women and children led the funeral procession for victims who died in two explosions, one by a car bomb and the other an explosive charge near the municipal services office.

"There is no god but God; terrorists are the enemies of God," the mourners chanted. "Sunnis and Shias, we are all enemies of al-Qaeda."

Iraqi security forces imposed strict security measures in Baghdad, Fallujah, Diyala, Kirkuk, Salah al-Din and Ninawa during funeral services for the victims, who were shrouded and given customary Islamic rites at mosques in these areas.

Tribal sheikhs, political leaders and parliament members of all sects participated in the services. Mourners and officials condemned the attacks, describing them as horrific, especially since they occurred during Ramadan.

Al-Qaeda responsible for violence

Deputy Prime Minister Saleh al-Mutlaq accused al-Qaeda of responsibility for the attacks.

"As usual, al-Qaeda caused devastation, destruction, bloodshed and the cries of women and children equally among Iraqis," he said. "This shows that [the organisation] considers all Iraqis, regardless of sect, as its enemies. There is blood on the sidewalks and streets of Iraqi cities, which had not yet dried. The investigation must be done in a professional way, and those in the army and police who are derelict must be held accountable."

The attacks, which involved suicide bombings, explosive charges, car bombs and armed attacks in at least 14 Iraqi cities, were the deadliest since a similar wave of bombings in May 2010.

They came a day after Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the so-called al-Qaeda emir, said in a video posted late Saturday on jihadist websites, "I call upon all Muslim men and young people all over the world, and I strongly urge them to join us."

Iraqi officials said the victims of the attacks were innocent citizens.

"These strikes are beyond what can be described as abhorrent and despicable because they targeted innocent people who were doing their daily work and were waiting to go back to their families and children before iftar," said Ali al-Talabani, a member of the defence and security committee for the Kirkuk provincial council.

"The latest bombings make it imperative to exert more effort to eliminate terror by building strong intelligence services and achieving genuine national reconciliation," Khalid al-Alwani, a member of parliament said.

"Al-Qaeda has used numerous methods of killing and bombing, and they saw how the Iraqis continue to appreciate life," he said. "The dreams of Iraqis are big, and the first dreams are to wipe out the last terrorist under their feet and declare Iraq a democratic country free of terror and a centre in the Middle East that can be counted on to build peace and stability."

'This is al-Qaeda's way'

Sheikh Wehayeb Hussein al-Khatlan, a tribal sheikh who took part in the funeral procession for victims in the Ameriya district of western Baghdad, said Iraqis will not remain silent about the attacks.

"This is al-Qaeda's way, killing and slaughtering innocent people during God's holiest month," he said.

"We shall bury our dead, but not their memories which will be like fire on al-Qaeda and its allies, as we will not remain silent about what has happened," al-Khatlan said.

Iskander Witwit, deputy chairman of parliament's defence and security committee, said, "The government will provide treatment to all victims who were injured in the latest bombings and has pledged to compensate the families of the martyrs in accordance with Iraqi law."

"We have trust in our people," he said. "They will not break or be weakened because of these vile attacks."

Mourners said that members of al-Qaeda must be brought to justice.

"I lost one of my dearest friends in the attacks," said Mohammed Hani Wakaa, 42. "He was a simple man who repaired bicycles in a shop in the centre of Kirkuk and was providing for his five children, his wife and his mother."

"Al-Qaeda must pay the price for this in any way. The security forces must allow us to partake in pursuing them to get rid of them fast," Wakaa said.

The only solution is eliminating terrorism and the parties in Iraq and then choosing efficient security men that had special training to combat terrorism. The information about every security person and his family has to be sought using the modern methods. The parliament has to be dissolved and ruling should be controlled only by the president. Also, there are different followed methods in implementing such operations. Some are through the bombing of some people for themselves and, of course, such a person may intentionally kill himself and commit suicide to kill other Muslims and just like that, he died an infidel and he will stand before the Lord on the day of resurrection as an infidel. Of course, such bombings where the person blows himself up will cause the deaths of many people.

These bombings shake their houses, kill their families and cause a lot of damage for all citizens in addition to a lot of psychological problems suffered by the Iraqi citizens. Even children pay the price of what is happening in their home countries as they cannot live their childhood but they are intimidated and afraid to move from their homes and all of this is due to the crimes of terrorism. All Iraqi officials must react to eliminate every spoiler in Iraq. The terrorist operations have increased significantly and we still do not see any progress from the government in eliminating those movements. The existence of those movements in Iraq has affected all sectors. Iraq has become a place harboring the terrorists and leaving the civilians in facing their fate alone. The government should be working to find a solution quickly to eliminate these terrorist cells or else the situation will be worse than what they are now.

In fact, I could not find any words to express my anger and my regret towards what is happening to our brothers in Iraq. This anger is the feeling of the entire Arab world towards what they are seeing on television screens. There are manifestations of panic and fear because of the incidents that are happening to them daily. They became homeless because of the demolition and the displacement of their families. Many of their relatives were killed and they cannot do anything to rescue them. There was also a violation of their daughters’ sanctity. The prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, forbids us to do so with the dead bodies which is a very bad thing. We must think seriously about the future of the country. For how long should we suffer every day? We are calling for an immediate and firm intervention of the Government. The judiciary must interfere to restore justice and punish the criminals. Indeed, the latter should receive a deterrent punishment for their crimes against the Iraqi society. On the other hand, the Army, the police and the Security Forces must cooperate in order to contain the lawlessness inside and outside the country, i.e. imposition of border control. They must prevent any infiltration of the terrorist groups inside the country. Besides, they must eradicate terrorists inside the country through effective, intensive and quick security plans which should be implemented immediately. On the other hand, the competent authorities should take the necessary measures to expose the perpetrators of these crimes, whether individuals, groups or political militias. We must deal with them toughly and harshly. In so doing, the competent authorities would manage to eradicate the corrupt people in the political scene. Those people are well-known. However, everything depends on the will of the Government to bring them to justice. Their trial will immediately help in the eradication of most terrorist groups.

Then, they prevent some aid to the State of Iraq that would push Iraq forward. Also, the killings and the kidnappings of the foreigners in the State of Iraq certainly would cut the political relationships between the State of Iraq and the other States to which such persons belong. The dangerous operations carried out by these terrorist movements and extremist groups, including the abductions of some dignitaries either internationally or at the Iraqi state level, would certainly raise the confusion and the many storms of course affecting the security of the Iraqi State. There are also some kind of terrorist operations that harm the Iraqis and the foreign citizens so much as well as harm the domestic economy and the foreign policy of the State of Iraq. They are direct killings, which are considered as major crimes. However, these operations sometimes affect the security and the stability of the Iraqi citizen, making him live an unstable and anxious life as well as always suffer from disorder. Sometimes, it can also affect the economy of Iraq where the Iraqi Government ensures the return of such facilities back to normal again and all of this is draining millions for its return. Hence, we congratulate the hero striver Iraqi Forces for their great efforts in getting rid of the terrorist movements and extremist groups.

The Iraqi government and mass media should not overestimate the human losses among the civilians because this affects the morale of the Iraqi people and the government should consider the civilians who live near the terrorists and the extremists as well as those who sympathize with those terrorists and extremists and who offer the moral, financial and intelligence support or the civilians who provide shelter to the terrorists and facilitate their escape from the government forces or the army. Consequently, they are not neutral at all. However, they are tyrants who allied with the terrorists. They must be treated like the terrorists, because these acts make them terrorists in the true sense of the word. According to this theory, there is no place for neutrality as to terrorism. The Iraqi government is required to fight terrorism in the strongest military ways, because this war is the main factor in defeating the terrorism, cutting off their communications, and making those who sympathize with them reluctant in joining the ranks of terrorism for fear of facing the same fate of the terrorists. This is the only way to get rid of the extremist thoughts of the terrorists and it would be the beginning of the end of the terrorism and the terrorists. Hence, fighting terrorism would help in achieving the general stability in Iraq. Thus, the war on terrorism in Iraq would have many positive results as to the purification of Iraq. We seek God’s help.

Targeting civilians has become one of the most important objectives of terrorist groups and terrorists. In fact, they are no longer able to face the Security Forces and this shows their weakness and helplessness. Thus, they only find these innocent people who have done nothing. They target civilians to continue their activities that no one accepts. They started bombing civilians’ vehicles and they even killed them unjustly. Most often terrorists target worship places, whether mosques, churches or temples in order to ignite sectarian strife among the people. They also target tourist places to hit the country's economy. Terrorism works on weakening the morale of people through intimidating them in various ways. Thus, they resort to blowing up passenger aircraft, they carry out bombing operations and assassinations in the crowded streets. Terrorist groups resort to intimidating and terrorizing civilians in order to achieve their objectives and specific demands through such intimidation. For instance, these terrorist groups resort to kidnapping some important persons or hijacking planes to blackmail the State and get what they want. Therefore, the State submits to their demands lest they carry out their threats and lest the innocent people will be killed. We can understand terrorism against the State or against the Army, but terrorism targeting people who know nothing about weapons and have nothing to do with politics is a great crime. States should ensure their citizens’ safety so that the world will leave in peace.

The Iraqi Government must fight terrorism with the toughest war tactics because this war is a major and essential factor in breaking the strength of terrorism, cutting their contacts and making the sympathizers reluctant to join their ranks for fear that they will get the same as is happening to the terrorists. This might be the beginning of getting rid of the terrorists and terrorism. Therefore, fighting terrorism will help in establishing general stability in Iraq. The war against terrorism in Iraq will occur and have a strong positive outcome in Iraq and its purification. Allah is the helper.

The old Iraq was one of the most beautiful nations and their greatest. Today, it has become a home that looks like an insulting, humiliating, and the least developed nation and the most corruption of them in the areas of life. Brothers, from time to time killers return to their dirty acts. As usual, we hear the courtesy statements from all parties. When we need a serious stand against terrorism, the voices which call for human rights and forget the victim's rights get louder. Unfortunately, I say that terrorism is not baseless. There are people who support and give it shelter. I think they are known or it is easy to identify them. More accurately, some of them are caught and they have all the rights that are even more than the rights of the average citizens. There are political leaders who support them strongly and through all means. They even tell them that they will be released without any distinction whether they were innocent or guilty. Please, stop the manipulation and leniency with regard to the blood of the poor people. I would also say, their blood is underestimated and they don't get their due rights. They deserve more and more. They are the sacrifices of the new Iraq, the Iraq of constitution, rights and democracy (even for a relative degree). Iraq will be better in comparison to many countries whether Arab or foreign.

Today, the latest technique that the genius of barbaric terrorism has come up with in Iraq is the bombing technique, which is a bombing method that terrorist groups have been implementing in most of their terrorist attacks in Iraq. They have kept on doing this for a long period of time due to the fact that it reaps very large numbers of Iraqi victims for them, and this is their technique of choice, as through this barbaric and murderous terrorist technique, the terrorist groups get their funding for bombs and explosives of the best types, and they store these bombs and set them up in vehicles and these become time bombs waiting to be detonated. Then the terrorists plant these cars in places with the largest crowds of Iraqi citizens, as this ensures for them the highest number of victims and on a large scale. So, the great people of Iraq have indeed suffered the harshest forms of real hardships due to the circumstances that they have been through at the hands of these terrorist bombing attacks, and which caused Iraq to lose the cream of its youths.
