The year-long political crisis in Yemen spawned a fresh burst of political activism across the country, as officials have registered a number of new political parties that aim to develop democratic practices and enhance freedoms.

Mohamed al-Amari, secretary of the Committee for the Affairs of Parties and Political Organisations for the House of Representatives and the Shura Council, said that nine new political parties have been announced.

"The law and the Constitution guarantee the right of Yemenis to establish political parties. That was true before the political crisis in Yemen in 2011 and is true after it," he told Al-Shorfa.

He added that the recent crisis in Yemen created a social impetus for new leaders to enter the political arena through parties that are based on new visions.

Among the nine new parties established are the Al-Mustaqbal (Future) Democratic Party, the Youth Justice and Development Party, the Social Peace Party, the Youth National Democratic Development Party, the Freedom and Justice Party, the Arab Spring Party, the Justice and Development Bloc, the Freedom and Development Party and the Al-Rashad Union Party.

Al-Amari said that with the new additions, the total number of registered parties in Yemen now stands at 32.

He said that while "the parties and political organisations law strictly prohibits foreign funding," it allows organisational and cultural co-operation with other parties abroad.

"These new parties seek to develop democratic life and lay the foundation of a modern Yemen, and the right do that is guaranteed to them by the framework of national principles," al-Amari said.

"The future will favour the parties that further their communities through their political, economic and cultural programmes," he said, saying their survival will hinge on the merit of their political practices. The parties' purposes are essentially political, but some also engage in social and educational activity, he said.

New political parties

Mohammed al-Bashiri, secretary-general of the Social Peace Party, told Al-Shorfa that his party "seeks peace, tranquillity and stability for the Yemeni people", adding that Yemenis "have suffered greatly from violence and terrorism".

Founded in December 2011, the Social Peace Party aims to cement greater social unity across Yemeni society, he said.

"The party's plans and programmes centre on educating the community about the importance of social peace as the underpinning of genuine development, and the importance of cohesion among the people of the country as partners in Yemen's political, economic, social and cultural development," al-Bashiri said.

Amal Lutf al-Thawr, head of the Arab Spring Party, told Al-Shorfa her party's mission is to advance Yemeni society and build a state of law and order, noting that the process of building a civil state begins with three words: justice, development and progress.

The first Yemeni woman to preside over a political party from its inception, al-Thawr said her party's "primary concerns are the youth and women".

The Arab Spring Party "carries the hopes and aspirations of the youth for the establishment of a modern civil state on the basis of fairness and equal citizenship", she said, adding that it "seeks to highlight the role and contributions of women alongside their fellow [countrymen]".

She told Al-Shorfa, "The youth took to the squares to protest corruption and bring about comprehensive change, since the Arab Spring is a wave of comprehensive change culminating in [the creation of] a modern state."

Youth revolution provides impetus

Political analyst Mohammed al-Ghabri said the number of new political parties is unprecedented.

"The establishment of new parties is guaranteed by the law and the Constitution, but it was the youth revolution that provided the impetus for the founding of such a large number of parties in record time," he said.

"Yemen has seen nine new political parties announce their founding within less than a year, compared to the 23 parties that were founded in the span of 22 years since the Republic of Yemen was established in 1990," al-Ghabri said, adding that some new parties were not approved by the parties and political organisations committee.

The law states that a political party becomes legal 45 days after the announcement of its founding if the committee fails to find any objections.

Yemen is now witnessing many peaceful demonstrations calling for change to the existing regime of governance that has emerged with the onset of the Tunisian, the Egyptian and the Libyan revolutions, in which they have all demanded the overthrow of the regime. There are many other States which are considered as the most demanding in their claims, and several provinces of the Free Yemen are experiencing and are characterized by many peaceful demonstrations as well as sit-ins categorically which have unified demands. Even the Southern community might support them in it. It seeks to secede from the State. There are communities in the South of the State where these demonstrations call for maintaining the unity of the State of Yemen and the abstention of the idea of separation of the South from the North where the Houthis in the North of Yemen are found. These demonstrations have stopped targeting the Yemeni President inside in the mosque of the Republican Palace, which led to his wounds and moved to the treatment of his injury to Saudi Arabia where many of the followers of the Yemeni President, his Prime Minister and his advisers said that the events that the State of Yemen and all the Arab area are going through are schemes made by hostile organizations against the stability of all the Arab regions.

The State of Yemen is a small country which is situated southwest of Saudi Arabia which is located in West Asia. Its area is about half a million kilometers and its borders are in the North, the State of Saudi Arabia, and in the East, Oman and Yemen, which have a coastline on the Arabian Sea. It has another coastline on the Red Sea Coast, which is in the West from where Yemen overlooks the strait of the famous Bab al-Mandab. Yemen has several islands in the Red Sea and the Arabian Sea. The internal civil war started and many parties in the south of Yemen have announced their separation from Yemen after one month of the civil war. The reasons for the civil war go back to some continuous disputes that have begun after the unity for a short time. They were represented as the existence of their corrupt administrative and some disputes over the rule which did not have any consideration. The civil war ended a few months after the defeat of the separatists and their escape from the State. Since that time, the features of dissatisfaction and non-acceptance still exist for the inhabitants of the South in the problems, the last of which comes with the emergence of a peaceful group calling for secession from the State.

The political and the Arab scene reflect a reality that we never see in the entire world. In fact, it is a reality that is characterized by the existence of dictatorships, very tyrant governors and absent or absented political parties hence the lack of the so-called social project of the Arab parties. Thus, in the beginning, we have to establish political parties in Yemen. In addition, all Yemenis have to join these parties since they may be able to achieve their rights.

The political parties represent the first step towards building a strong political and powerful society. Yemen suffered from the suppression and oppression at the hands of a tyrant president who ruled it with the iron and fire. Yemen needs development and progress, because the healthy political life starts from the parties. Yemen needs the political parties and the active participation of the youth to build a sound political life.

In all the educational systems, the child goes through from the beginning of his educational journey in the first year in school until the third preparatory year, which is at the gates of the adolescence. Then comes the stage of the university. All these educational stages contribute to one’s personality and help in forming his thought and viewpoint towards life. Hence, they either strengthen the spirit of moderation and logic in judging things, or they may also make him a man with limited mental abilities. The different mass media including the TV programs and artistic works or radio programs constitute one’s opinions and way of life. Nevertheless, the influence of the family remains the strongest. The family’s influence is the main factor in shaping one’s thought and opinion regarding things in general. Since the birth, the family shapes one’s view and acceptance of all things in the universe. God created Man with a pure and innocent nature without any experiences in life. However, one acquires these experiences throughout his life in the educational institutions or through the mass media. The most important factor is the family zone. The child’s upbringing determines his opinions about everything and they would be either moderate and logical, extremist, or even passive or indifference. All the opinions and lifestyles are formed through the family.
