DUBAI-A Russian national is being held in Dubai on suspicion of killing former Chechen warlord Sulim Yamadayev at his home in the Emirates.
A March 31 Reuters report quoted Dubai police chief Gen. Dahi Khalfan Tamim as saying that the police had arrested a Russian national and were preparing to interrogate him. “We have a suspect, but are continuing our investigation. There is no confusion over what happened, however. An organised criminal group was behind the assassination."
The incident occurred March 28. Gen. Tamim said Yamadayev had been living in Dubai on a Russian passport bearing the name Suleiman Madov.
Tamim said that the 36-year-old victim had been confronted in the car park of the building where he lived and there were indications that he was under surveillance prior to his assassination.
Russian Consul in Dubai Sergei Krasnogor said that Yamadayev had continued to challenge the Chechen President Kadyrov for control of the Chechen security forces up to last year when he was discharged from the command of a special detachment and forced to flee. He confirmed that Dubai police notified him of Yamadayev’s murder, but said he had not yet seen any documents or passport of the arrested Russian national.
