The head of Cairo's revered Al Azhar University has died of a heart attack while on a trip to Saudi Arabia, Al Jazeera reported Wednesday (March 10). Mohammed Sayed Tantawi, 82, had a heart attack while boarding a plane early Wednesday morning and was pronounced dead by the time he arrived at the hospital. Tantawi had previously undergone heart surgery.
Most recently he spoke out against the face veil, the niqab, saying it was a tradition that has no Islamic foundation. He also wrote several books, including a 15-volume encyclopaedia on interpreting Islam.
