Egypt restores ancient monastery

2010-02-06

What is believed to be the world's oldest Christian monastery has been restored in the mountains close to the Red Sea, BBC News reported Friday (February 5th). Saint Anthony's is believed to be 1,600 years old, and is a popular pilgrimage site for Egypt's Coptic Christians. The government funded restoration effort cost an estimated $14 million and took eight years to complete. The monastery's wall, tower, two churches and the monk's quarters were restored. Saint Anthony settled in a cave to live in isolation in the third century. When he died, his followers built the monastery on the site.
