A lack of funds is forcing the United Nations to reduce food rations it provides for around 1 million Yemenis, Reuters reported Friday (February 5th). Limited donor support is threatening UN humanitarian assistance in Yemen, said Emilia Casella, a spokeswoman for the World Food Program (WFP). "We are reducing rations to stretch it out and make it last as long as possible," she said.
The cutbacks come as food prices rise in the country. More than 250,000 Yemenis have fled their homes as a result of instability in both the north and the south. A recent WFP survey revealed that one in three Yemenis suffers from chronic hunger. "If donor funds are not found in the next few weeks it is likely it will lead to further reductions," said Casella.
