Yemen’s Houthi rebels turned down a government proposal to implement a ceasefire, Gulf News reported on Tuesday (February 9th). Earlier in the week, the government presented a timetable for ending the longstanding conflict, which outlines six conditions that include leaving the northern mountains and surrendering weapons. A mediator has handed a counter-proposal to Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh from the insurgents on implementing the conditions to end hostilities.

The president’s nephew, General Yahiya Saleh, denounced the six conditions as a sign of the state’s weakness. "The government must have set only one condition, asking the rebels to surrender themselves and hand over all weapons, and then the rebel leaders must be put on trial," he said at a press conference in Sanaa on Monday (February 8th).
