TEHRAN — On Nov. 22, Iran began large-scale air defence war games aimed at protecting its nuclear facilities from attack, Iranian state television reported. An air force commander boasted that the country could deter any military strike by Israel.
The report said the five-day drill would cover central, western and southern parts of the country, a third of its territory.
Gen. Ahmad Mighani, head of an air force unit in charge of responding to threats to Iran's air space, said the war games would specifically cover regions where Iran's nuclear facilities are located. The drill involves Iran's elite Revolutionary Guard, the paramilitary Basij forces, as well as army units.
The West has accused Iran of embarking on a nuclear weapons programme. Iran denies the charge and insists their programme is for peaceful purposes only.
Air Force Gen. Amir Ali Hajizadeh sought to play down the significance of Israel's threats against his country, saying they amounted to psychological warfare.
"We are sure they are not able to do anything against us since they cannot predict our reaction," Hajizadeh was quoted as saying by the Guard's official website,
"If their fighter planes can escape from Iran's air defense system, their bases will be hit by our devastating surface-to-surface missiles before they land," he said.
Iran's Defence Minister Gen. Ahmad Vahidi said Iran planned to design and produce its own air defence missiles, perhaps in response to a delay in the delivery of S-300 anti-aircraft missiles from Russia, meant to be a key component of Iran's air defence. Iran complained that the delay was due to Israeli and U.S. pressure.

We want scholars to bring people closer together. The worst disaster that could befall a nation is when scholars and jurists don't do their jobs.
A country that wants to succeed in a war must manufacture missiles in its own country. It cannot import missiles from Russia. An example of this is found in the arms factories in Germany. They never stopped working during World War II. A country that depends on other countries for its weapons, however, cannot win a war or destroy the enemy. Thus, Arabs must start immediately manufacturing weapons in their countries, bringing expertise from all over the world and granting citizenship to those technicians, engineers and scientists who desire it. In this way, their countries can rise to the level of developed countries. They must avoid any racism in the granting of citizenship. No one should say that this is his country, no foreigner should enter it, or that no one should be granted citizenship, except for football players. They pay these ridiculous players salaries and provide with financial temptations and citizenship, while the technicians, engineers and scientists who have served the country for tens of y ears are denied the same. It should be offered to them and granted them on a silver platter, because they have contributed to the rise of the country and saved it from regressing. God is the one gives success.
